Peru’s Defense Ministry Responds to Calls for Intervention

Peru’s Ministry of Defense has published a statement today responding to calls on social media for an Armed Forces to stage a coup against Pedro Castillo if he is to be declared winner of the presidential election.

“The Ministry of Defense and the armed institutions reiterate their commitment to the Constitution, democracy and the principle of neutrality assumed by the Transitional and Emergency Government. Likewise, we reaffirm the commitment to respect the citizens’ will expressed at the polls on June 6, as appropriate.” say’s the communique.

It continues, “We urge all Peruvians to respect the results of the electoral process and to work together to strengthen democracy and promote the development of the country. We call for unity above all our differences.”

This statement was released in response to numerous calls by supporters of Keiko Fujimori for a military coup. One poster, widely shared on social media, called for a rally at 5pm local time, outside the Military’s Joint Command on Avenida Arequipa in Lima”. The poster calls on the Armed Forces to ‘restore order’ and states that “These heroes will not permit our democracy to be stolen by a group of Senderistas and Terrorists, who have, by force and by cheating, kidnapped it.”
