Without Robin Williams, Matt Damon might never have portrayed Private Ryan. In 1997, an encounter arranged by the actor with Steven Spielberg altered the destiny of the future star of \u201cGood Will Hunting\u201d and propelled his career in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

In 1997, Matt Damon was not yet the international star we know today. The young actor was, however, about to experience a meteoric rise thanks to “Good Will Hunting,” which he had written with his friend Ben Affleck.<\/p>\n

The film would earn him the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1998 and put him under the spotlight. But even before this accolade, a fortuitous sequence of events had already landed him one of the most significant roles of his career: that of James Francis Ryan in “Saving Private Ryan,” the epic by Steven Spielberg.<\/p>\n

The Crucial Meeting Arranged by Robin Williams<\/h2>\n

At the time, Spielberg was in Boston finishing the filming of \u201cAmistad,\u201d while also preparing his next feature film. Not far away, Gus Van Sant and his team were rehearsing for “Good Will Hunting.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It was then that Robin Williams, who played Professor Sean Maguire in the film, decided to bring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to meet the renowned filmmaker. A gesture the future Jason Bourne actor would never forget.<\/p>\n

\u201cRobin Williams not only realized our dream by acting in the film, but he also helped me land the role in ‘Saving Private Ryan,’\u201d he shared in an interview featured on the Instagram account Outstanding Screenplays.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cSpielberg was shooting a scene at the Capitol in Boston, Anthony Hopkins included. The set was close to where we were rehearsing for ‘Good Will Hunting.’ Robin insisted on taking us to meet Steven Spielberg, Ben Affleck and I,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

An Audition That Initially Led Nowhere<\/h2>\n

This meeting was far from trivial. Matt Damon had already tried to secure a role in “Saving Private Ryan” by submitting a filmed audition, but his application had not been successful.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cHe knew it wouldn\u2019t be a bad idea to introduce us to one of the greatest directors of all time, and that we would appreciate it a lot. It turns out I had already sent in a video audition for ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and had not been hired. When Spielberg saw me, he said, \u2018I think I\u2019ve seen you somewhere before.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, Spielberg had previously noticed the young actor in “Courage Under Fire,” released the previous year. However, his physical transformation for this war drama initially prevented him from fitting the image the director had of Private Ryan.<\/p>\n

\u201cI replied, \u2018I was in that movie, ‘Courage Under Fire.\u2019 And he said, \u2018Yes! That\u2019s the one. It\u2019s funny, I told my wife that was exactly the profile I was looking for to play Private Ryan. Unfortunately, the actor is too skinny.\u2019 And I was, having lost 40 pounds to play a heroin addict in ‘Courage Under Fire,\u2019\u201d the actor explained.<\/p>\n

When Spielberg met him again in Boston, Matt Damon had regained weight and now exactly matched the appearance Spielberg was seeking for Ryan. Without Robin Williams\u2019 introduction, the filmmaker might never have reconsidered him in this new light.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s only because Robin Williams introduced me to him that he said, \u2018Ah, okay, now you\u2019re exactly the kind of guy I\u2019m looking for this job.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Spielberg Wanted a Fresh Face<\/h2>\n

In an interview with Roger Ebert in 1998, Steven Spielberg also recounted this pivotal meeting. The director wanted to give the role to an actor not yet well-known to the general public, capable of portraying an ordinary young American soldier.<\/p>\n

\u201cRobin Williams introduced us. I thought he had the true look of an average American, and that he was also a very good actor. Who could have guessed he would explode into stardom, become a huge star overnight, and win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay? And that he wouldn\u2019t be the unknown actor I had in mind? But he was the character.\u201d<\/p>\n

Between the time Matt Damon was cast and “Saving Private Ryan” hit theaters, “Good Will Hunting” had indeed made him one of Hollywood\u2019s new essential faces.<\/p>\n

A Monument in War Cinema<\/h2>\n

“Saving Private Ryan” follows Captain Miller, played by Tom Hanks. After the Allied forces landed on Omaha Beach, the officer is ordered to lead his squad behind enemy lines to find James Ryan, whose three brothers had been killed in combat within days.<\/p>\n

Throughout their journey into hostile territory, the soldiers question the purpose of their mission: is it worth risking eight men to try to save just one?<\/p>\n

Fueled in part by its impressive opening sequence dedicated to the D-Day landings, the film immediately established itself as a classic of war cinema. It won five Oscars in 1999, including Best Director for Steven Spielberg. For Matt Damon, this film also marked a crucial step in a career that Robin Williams had helped accelerate, almost by chance.<\/p>\n
