Now appearing in the movie Garance, Adèle Exarchopoulos recently shared insights during the promotional tour. As a guest on Konbini’s Video Club, she revealed a preference that will resonate with fans of Japanese anime and manga in general.

While holding a DVD of the series Death Note, the star of La Vie d’Adèle immediately praised it, asking director Jeanne Herry if she was familiar with manga like Monster or Death Note, to which Herry admitted she wasn’t.

Persisting, Adèle asked, “Not even classics like Dragon Ball Z and others?” To which Herry replied indifferently, prompting Adèle to retort, “Wait, you can’t know, you haven’t seen it.”

Adèle’s Love for Death Note

“Okay, you completely don’t care, you’re totally closed off. But Death Note, it’s extraordinary. It’s about a high school student. A notebook falls from the sky, and he realizes that if he writes a name in this notebook, the person dies. He discovers he has absolute power.”

Death Note is extraordinary.

“He starts to take justice into his own hands, killing all the criminals. Then, you have a very enigmatic, laid-back investigator who starts looking into him. It’s very deep, somewhat in line with Monster,” explained Adèle Exarchopoulos, clearly a big fan of this cult anime, which is also available on Netflix.

For those unfamiliar, Death Note is a Japanese manga created by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. It was published from 2003 to 2006 in the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump.

The story follows Light Yagami, a brilliant high school student who stumbles upon a mysterious notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written in it. He decides to use it to eliminate criminals and create a world he deems better.

His secret identity, Kira, quickly catches the attention of the renowned detective L, setting off a gripping psychological duel between the two. The manga spans 13 volumes and quickly became a massive hit in Japan and internationally.

A Legendary and Popular Tale

Death Note has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most popular mangas of its time. In 2006, Death Note was adapted into an anime by Madhouse studios. The series, directed by Tetsuro Araki, features 37 episodes and significantly helped spread the manga’s fame outside Japan.

The franchise also saw multiple film adaptations. Two Japanese films, Death Note and Death Note 2: The Last Name, were released in 2006. A third film focusing on L, L: Change the World, came out in 2008.

In 2016, a new Japanese film, Death Note: Light Up the New World, revisited the universe years after the original story’s events. Death Note was also adapted into a Japanese TV series in 2015. Two years later, Netflix released an American adaptation directed by Adam Wingard.

This film, heavily criticized by fans, transported the story to the United States and altered many elements of the original manga. Over the years, Death Note has also been expanded into novels, video games, a musical, and various spin-off stories.

More than 20 years after its inception, Death Note remains one of the most iconic Japanese works of its generation, thanks largely to its original concept, dark ambiance, and the intense rivalry between Light and L.
