Ro Khanna.<\/p>\n<div class=\"body-description\"><\/p>\n<p>\n\tU.S. Vice President JD Vance faced backlash after a controversial social media post late Tuesday, in which he defended the Trump administration&#8217;s handling of due process rights\u2014a constitutional guarantee for all individuals in the U.S., including immigrants currently facing detention and deportation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn his post on the platform X, Vance, who holds a law degree from Yale University, questioned the role of due process, framing it as a matter of &#8220;resources, the public interest, the status of the accused, the proposed punishment, and so many other factors,&#8221; rather than a constitutional right.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tVance belittled concerns about due process and argued that legal proceedings for immigrants would overburden the system. He also charged that the Biden administration had allowed &#8220;about 20 million&#8221; undocumented immigrants into the country, a number that experts have dismissed as unfounded.\n<\/p>\n<p><em>New York Times<\/em> columnist Jamelle Bouie criticized Vance\u2019s post, labeling him &#8220;a contemptible liar and a blatant adversary of the Constitution.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBouie pointed out, &#8220;The main factual assertion here is utterly incorrect, and even if it were correct, the Constitution explicitly includes two due process clauses,&#8221; referring to the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments. He expressed his grave concerns by stating, &#8220;I genuinely mean it when I say they loathe our freedoms.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tJournalist Matt Novak commented on the broader implications of denying due process to undocumented immigrants, saying, &#8220;If undocumented individuals have no rights to due process, then effectively no one does.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&#8220;Individuals like Vance are aware of this yet remain indifferent,&#8221; Novak continued. &#8220;If someone can be arbitrarily labeled &#8216;illegal&#8217; without due process, then anyone can be declared illegal and you lose your right to contest it. It\u2019s a fundamentally simple concept.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"pull-quote\">\n\t&#8220;Without due process, Vance is as likely to ruin the life of an innocent as he is to target the guilty.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Trump administration has evidently disregarded due process in its ongoing arrests and deportations of immigrants, without proving their involvement in any crime. A recent <em>Times<\/em> investigation revealed minimal evidence of criminal activities or gang affiliations among the many men deported to El Salvador last month.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAmong the deported was Maryland resident Kilmar Abrego Garcia, now in a notorious Salvadoran prison. Key Trump administration figures, including homeland security adviser Stephen Miller, have argued that Garcia was not entitled to due process.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&#8220;The only process he deserved was deportation,&#8221; Miller posted on social media.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHowever, in a landmark 9-0 decision last week, the Supreme Court, dominated by conservative justices, ruled that the Trump administration must &#8220;facilitate&#8221; Garcia\u2019s return to the U.S. The Court also asserted that &#8220;detainees under removal orders [from the Alien Enemies Act of 1798] are entitled to notice and a chance to contest their removal,&#8221; directly opposing Vance and other officials\u2019 stance.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSpeaking at Vance\u2019s alma mater on Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) issued a stern warning about the dangers posed by the vice president\u2019s outright denial of due process rights.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&#8220;Without due process, Vance is just as likely to destroy the life of an innocent person as he is to correctly identify the guilty.
