A recent push by a faction of ultra-conservative House Republicans to significantly reduce Medicaid funding was seemingly orchestrated by an external research institute leader with connections to the influential Koch network.<\/p>\n
According to a report from Politico<\/em> on Friday, a PDF of the letter circulated among House members revealed “digital metadata” indicating Brian Blase, president of Paragon Health Institute, as its author. Paragon is a research organization recognized for its ties to the Koch network, which prominently supports libertarian and conservative causes.<\/p>\n As detailed by InfluenceWatch, Paragon was the beneficiary of almost $2 million from Stand Together in 2021. Stand Together operates as a core organization for a suite of initiatives funded primarily by Charles Koch, a notable conservative businessman and political financier.<\/p>\n Recently, Paragon has been advocating for federal policies to enforce more stringent eligibility verifications for Medicaid recipients, an action they argue would eliminate wrongful payments. Critics in health policy circles argue that such measures would unjustly complicate the process for beneficiaries legitimately qualifying for Medicaid, potentially causing them to lose their coverage.<\/p>\n The contents of the letter, endorsed by Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and his colleagues, mirror the recommendations made by Paragon. It accuses Medicaid of “political abuse” which purportedly contributes to the federal government’s financial woes and calls for “structural Medicaid reform” in the upcoming reconciliation package proposed by the party.<\/p>\n Tony Carrk, executive director of the watchdog organization Accountable.US, commented on the incident, stating, “It\u2019s difficult to imagine a more glaring instance of congressional Republicans being influenced by special interests to the detriment of the American populace than Chip Roy directly transferring content from special interest groups into his correspondence.”<\/p>\n Carrk further criticized the overt submission to wealthy conservative interests, lamenting it as a “disturbing testament to the lengths congressional Republicans will go to implement severe cuts to American healthcare in order to finance tax reductions for the wealthiest individuals.”<\/p>\n The controversial letter comes at a time when congressional Republicans are internally debating the extent and methodology of Medicaid cuts to balance out the enormous expected costs associated with another series of tax reductions for affluent Americans.<\/p>\n Earlier in the week, as reported by Common Dreams<\/em>, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) expressed his unwillingness to support Medicaid cuts exceeding $500 billion over the coming decade.
