Three years after “Thirteen Lives,” which recounted the incredible true story of a Thai soccer team trapped in a cave, Ron Howard returns with “Eden.” Having won an Oscar for “A Beautiful Mind” (Best Picture and Best Director), Howard has directed notable films including “The Da Vinci Code,” “Cinderella Man,” and “Willow.”<\/p>\n

Based on a True Story<\/h2>\n

This survival thriller, penned by Noah Pink (“Genius”), draws inspiration from the true story known as “The Gal\u00e1pagos Affair.” In the early 1930s, European settlers made their home on the uninhabited island of Floreana in the Pacific Ocean. Over the years, several settlers mysteriously vanished, leaving their fates unresolved. Two survivors penned books about their ordeal: “Satan Came to Eden<\/i>” by Dore Strauch in 1936, and “Postlagernd Floreana<\/i>” by Margaret Wittmer in 1959. The story also inspired Georges Simenon’s novel “Those Who Are Thirsty<\/i>,” published in 1938.<\/p>\n

In this suspenseful film, Dr. Friedrich Ritter (Jude Law) and his wife, Dora (Vanessa Kirby), settle on a deserted island to live in complete self-sufficiency. Dr. Ritter, a German philosopher obsessed with Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, works on writing a manual for a new way of life, proclaiming himself the king of Floreana Island as reported by international media. However, the arrival of Margret (Sydney Sweeney), her husband Heinz (Daniel Br\u00fchl), and their young son Harry (Jonathan Tittel) disrupts this utopia.<\/p>\n

As the two families attempt to coexist, a new group led by a notorious heiress known as the Baroness (Ana de Armas), along with her two male companions (Felix Kammerer and Toby Wallace) who cater to her every whim, arrives on the scene. A power struggle for control of the island ensues.<\/p>\n

It’s like a season of Survivor where the contestants don’t make it out.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In an interview with Vanity Fair<\/span>, Ron Howard stated, “You’d be surprised how true to life the film stays. What’s eerie about this story is that a handful of people went there, and half of them ended up dead or missing. It’s intense. It’s like a season of Survivor where the participants don’t make it out.<\/i>“<\/p>\n

When you meet these characters, they’re quirky, even eccentric, sometimes humorous \u2013 you never know what they’re going to do next. They’re unpredictable. But as the tension rises, they become dangerous. It really makes you wonder who will come out on top as they struggle to redefine themselves in this place. Society follows you because society is human.”<\/i><\/p>\n

The release date for “Eden” has not yet been announced in France. The film is set to premiere on August 22, 2025, in the United States. It was showcased at the Toronto Film Festival in 2024.<\/p>\n
