For more than a century, gravity has been seen as the invisible glue holding the universe together. But a radical new theory suggests we may have been thinking about it all wrong\u2014and that what we call gravity could actually be something else entirely.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A new approach to gravity<\/h2>\n

Physicists at Aalto University in Finland have proposed a bold framework that attempts to do what Einstein and generations of scientists have struggled with: unify gravity with the three forces of the Standard Model\u2014electromagnetism, and the weak and strong nuclear forces.<\/p>\n

Instead of treating gravity as the curvature of spacetime, as Einstein described, the team suggests it emerges from the symmetries of a new construct called the \u201cspacetime dimension field.\u201d<\/strong> These four symmetries would generate what we perceive as gravitational effects at every point in the universe.<\/p>\n

What makes the theory even more promising is that it appears mathematically consistent (renormalizable) at the first order<\/strong>, a major hurdle that has plagued attempts to merge gravity with quantum mechanics.<\/p>\n
