This episode includes a particularly tough and controversial scene where Spike, in a moment of despair, attempts to force himself sexually on Buffy. \u201cActually, Buffy sent me to therapy. Buffy devastated me<\/i>,\u201d he shared. \u201cIt\u2019s a problematic scene for many fans of the show. And it was the darkest day of my professional life<\/i>,\u201d said the actor, now 63 years old.<\/p>\n

James Marsters revealed that this sequence was inspired by a personal experience of one of the show’s writers, who had once awkwardly tried to reconnect with an ex-boyfriend, believing that sleeping together one last time would fix everything, an incident that was one of the most painful memories of her life.<\/p>\n

James Marsters expressed serious concerns about the message the scene sent to viewers, explaining that the writers thought they could reverse gender roles due to Buffy’s status as a superheroine capable of defending herself. However, he felt that the audience did not see it the same way.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey thought that since Buffy was a superheroine and they could reverse the genders, since Buffy could easily defend herself against it. The writers thought a man could do it to a woman and it would be the same thing<\/i>,\u201d he clarified, emphasizing the psychological and emotional impact this could have on viewers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to them and said, \u2018You know, guys, we’re providing a vicarious experience for the audience. Everyone watching Buffy identifies with her, and they’re not superheroes, so I’m doing this to every member of the audience, and they’re going to have very different reactions.\u2019<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

A Contractual Obligation, A Personal Trauma<\/h2>\n

Although he tried to dispute the scene, James Marsters<\/span> did not have the legal power to refuse it. \u201cWe shot the scene, and it was hell. I was in my personal hell. I dislike scenes of sexual predation, anything related to it<\/i>,\u201d he stated bluntly.<\/p>\n

He added that he always avoids such types of roles or scenes, which he cannot stand either on-screen or in fiction: \u201cI don’t audition for these kinds of things. If a movie contains this kind of scene, I won’t go see it. If it’s on TV, I have to turn it off or else I’ll break it. I have a very visceral reaction to these kinds of things.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

Pain Shared by Sarah Michelle Gellar<\/h2>\n

Sarah Michelle Gellar, the iconic performer of Buffy, also shares a reluctance to revisit this period of the series. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/span> in 2023, she admitted: \u201cI struggle with season six. It wasn’t right for our characters at the time, and I simply don’t want to watch it again.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n
