During a town hall event broadcast by Univision<\/em>, the largest Spanish-language network in the U.S., reactions from the audience were unmistakable as Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, referred to the violent January 6, 2021, riot as a “day of love.” This event saw Trump encourage his followers to storm the Capitol. Many voters looked visibly confused by his characterization of the events.<\/p>\n

Ramiro Gonz\u00e1lez, a construction worker from Tampa, Florida, expressed his concerns directly to Trump. Although Gonz\u00e1lez had supported Trump in previous elections and was a registered Republican, he found Trump’s actions and lack of action concerning the January 6 events disconcerting.<\/p>\n

“The events of January 6, and your delay in response while your supporters were assaulting the Capitol,” Gonz\u00e1lez pointed out to Trump.<\/p>\n

On that day, Trump had delivered a speech in Washington D.C., rallying his supporters to march toward the Capitol where the Congress was certifying Joe Biden’s presidential election win.<\/p>\n

This followed multiple weeks during which Trump and his allies spread false claims about the election being stolen through rigged voting systems, illegal votes, and demanded recounts in several states. However, these recounts did not support any of their allegations.<\/p>\n

In response to Gonz\u00e1lez, Trump denied that his continuous misstatements about the election’s integrity had any role in the violent events of January 6.<\/p>\n

“Hundreds of thousands of people came to Washington, not because of me but because they believed the election was fraudulent,” Trump said.<\/p>\n

As Trump provided his explanations, Univision<\/em> cameras captured the shocked expressions of audience members, notably after Trump claimed that “no one was killed” during the riot, contradicting his previous mention of Ashli Babbitt’s death. Five fatalities have been linked to the event.<\/p>\n

Gonz\u00e1lez’s disbelief was palpable when Trump referred to the day as “a day of love.”<\/p>\n

“This was the first attack on the Capitol by U.S. citizens, and he calls it a day of love,” remarked U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), who was present during the attack. “It was a day of terror, not just for us at the Capitol but for all Americans. We cannot allow this man to return to the White House.”<\/p>\n

The Democratic Vice Presidential campaign of Kamala Harris also shared a compilation of reactions from the town hall, focusing on Trump\u2019s comments about environmental policies.<\/p>\n

Some observers have praised the audience members at the town hall for their incisive questions. Jorge Vel\u00e1squez, a farmworker, questioned Trump about his plans to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, highlighting the potential devastating impact on the agricultural sector and questioning the effect on food prices.<\/p>\n
