Did you know that Jim Carrey almost lost his life while filming the iconic movie “The Truman Show”? This incident left the director deeply shaken.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Released in theaters in 1998, “The Truman Show” tells the story of a man who leads a seemingly idyllic life, unaware that his every move is broadcast on a reality TV show. It stands out as one of Jim Carrey’s most significant films. However, it nearly became his last. As reported by Farout Magazine<\/span>, Carrey came close to dying during one of the scenes directed by Peter Weir.<\/p>\n

The nearly fatal scene is the climax of “The Truman Show,” where the protagonist manages to evade the cameras, conquers his fear of water, and leaps onto a boat. To prevent him from leaving the fictional town of Seahaven, Christof (played by Ed Harris) unleashes a massive storm that knocks Truman into the water, nearly drowning him.<\/p>\n

Despite numerous safety measures, Jim Carrey almost drowned while filming this scene in a large water tank. “I was wearing wool clothes\u2014a heavy wool sweater, wool pants, and shoes\u2014and they had jet engines blowing at me,”<\/i> Jim Carrey revealed in a 2018 interview with Vanity Fair<\/span>. “They had these massive wave machines creating the illusion of a storm.”<\/i><\/p>\n

“They Thought I Was Acting”<\/h2>\n

“There were divers under the water, and I was signaling to them that I was in trouble by clenching my fist. They thought I was acting,”<\/i> Carrey continued. “I sank, ran out of breath, and was drowning. At the bottom of the tank, with my last bit of consciousness, I turned around and made two huge back-and-forth motions toward the back of the storm, then surfaced, gasping for air and exhausted.”<\/i><\/p>\n

Jim Carrey chillingly concluded, “I barely made it to the wall where the sky was, and I clung to the edge, breathless, watching the storm rage on. It continued for another minute, then slowly calmed down. They didn’t know where I was, but eventually they saw me and came over. I almost died. Truly.”<\/i> The scene is available for viewing below.<\/p>\n

Director Peter Weir vividly remembers the frightening moment. “The incident in the Universal Studios water tank unfolded just as Jim described,”<\/i> he stated. “Despite all our safety protocols and divers in the water, we were essentially filming a man drowning, and it had to look real.”<\/i><\/p>\n

“It Gave Us Pause, to Say the Least”<\/h2>\n

“As I recall, Jim had a way to signal us if he was in distress\u2026 We only learned about it after I yelled ‘Cut’, which certainly gave us pause,”<\/i> the Australian filmmaker concluded. “Needless to say, we revised our safety procedures after that. And despite what had happened, Jim was ready to go for more takes.”<\/i> For this unforgettable role, Jim Carrey won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Film.<\/p>\n
