A dazzling series and a memorable film: two decades later, the crew of the Serenity continues to live in the hearts of fans \u2013 and in those of its actors. Jewel Staite discusses the legacy of \u201cFirefly\u201d and her relationship with Nathan Fillion.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Before becoming known for hit shows like Castle or The Rookie, Nathan Fillion was the captain of a unique spaceship in a sci-fi series that has become a cult classic over time: Firefly. Despite lasting only one season, the series remains etched in the memories \u2013 and hearts \u2013 of its fans.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Launched in the early 2000s and conceived by Joss Whedon, Firefly followed the adventures of the crew of the Serenity, a band of smugglers. In this space-western, Nathan Fillion portrayed Captain Malcolm \u201cMal\u201d Reynolds, a role still considered one of his most significant. Alongside him, actress Jewel Staite played Kaywinnet Lee \u201cKaylee\u201d Frye, the ship’s gentle and passionate mechanic.<\/p>\n

A Unique Series<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Twenty-three years after the abrupt end of the series, and 20 years following the release of the film Serenity: The Ultimate Rebellion, which extended the story, the memories of that time remain vivid for the actors. Jewel Staite, now 43, still speaks about it with certain emotion.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In an interview with Bleeding Cool last year, she shared that Firefly holds a unique place in her career, and explained what she believes made the series so special for fans.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if it’s just because of its short life span but [the series] was a bit of an underdog back then, and it essentially revolved around a group of underdogs battling a large corporation which people latched onto and felt like it was their [group] and that they were part of the story by being fans of the show and that\u2019s how it continues. It’s like living vicariously through it. You know, I always say it\u2019s like living in this other dimension with this fandom that won\u2019t let go.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Bond That Remains Strong<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Even though the filming of the show and the movie lasted only 6 months in total, the bonds among the cast members have remained strong. Jewel Staite spoke of Nathan Fillion with great admiration and gratitude.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cHe’s the best. He taught me so much about being a lead and I shamelessly stole many tricks from him on how to lead a group, how to treat people, how to create a good atmosphere, all of that. All this is thanks to him and what I saw when I was 19 years old and wanted to adopt as a way to create the perfect atmosphere because I feel it trickles down, as you know, from the top. If the person at the top maintains a level of humor, gratitude, and kindness, then everyone will follow their lead.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But their camaraderie didn\u2019t end there. Two decades later, Jewel Staite can still count on Nathan Fillion, especially in challenging moments.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cI still often ask Nathan for advice. If I’m in a tough situation and don’t know what to do, I send him a message and lay out the scenario, ask him what he would do, and he always gives the best advice. Even when I don’t want to hear it, even when it’s not what I wanted to hear, he gives good advice on how to proceed, and he’s always right.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Firefly may have only had a brief existence on screen, but its legacy endures. Not only through the fans who continue to cherish its memory, but also through the lasting bonds it created among its actors.<\/p>\n
