It was only years later that the truth came to light: to persuade Halle Berry to return as Storm in “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006), producers allegedly used a fake script. Director Matthew Vaughn claims he discovered this deceit just before leaving the project.<\/p>\n

During the 2023 New York Comic-Con, Vaughn\u2014who is known for his work on Kick-Ass and the Kingsman series\u2014shared a disturbing episode from his brief involvement with the third installment of the X-Men trilogy. Curious, he opened it and read an introductory scene in which Storm helps children in Africa suffering from drought by creating a rainstorm to provide them with water. \u201cThis is a true story and I don\u2019t care if I\u2019m not supposed to reveal it. Hollywood is very political and weird. I was in an executive\u2019s office and saw a script for X-Men 3. It was much thicker. I asked, ‘What\u2019s this draft?’ They said, \u2018Don\u2019t worry about it.\u2019 So I took it and read the first page, and it said, ‘Africa. Children dying from lack of water, and Storm creates a storm to save all these children.’ I thought it was a pretty cool idea,\u201d he recounted.<\/p>\n

Impressed by this heroine-focused opening, he asked for more details. The response he received was shocking. \u201cI asked, ‘What is this?’ They said, \u2018It\u2019s Halle Berry\u2019s script because she hasn\u2019t signed yet. It\u2019s what she wants it to be. And once she signs, we\u2019ll throw this script in the trash.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Faced with what he saw as a blatant lack of ethics, Vaughn decided to walk away. \u201cI thought if you do this to an Oscar-winning actress playing Storm, I quit. I stopped right then. I felt like I was cannon fodder,\u201d he told the audience.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Brett Ratner took over as director of the film, which was released in 2006. Despite the behind-the-scenes controversies, “X-Men: The Last Stand” was a box office success, grossing nearly $459 million globally.<\/p>\n
