Released in French theaters nearly three decades ago, “Seven” narrates the tale of Detective Somerset, a jaded old cop on the verge of retirement who encounters an extraordinary criminal. The killer, known as John Doe, has embarked on a mission to rid society of its sins by committing seven murders, each inspired by one of the seven deadly sins: gluttony, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and wrath. Somerset teams up with young detective Mills to solve the case.<\/p>\n

If you are among the nearly 5 million people who saw David Fincher’s “Seven” in theaters, then you undoubtedly remember John Doe, the notorious killer from the film. It’s impossible to forget this chilling character, played by Kevin Spacey, who quickly became one of the most formidable villains in the history of film.<\/p>\n

John Doe’s status as an iconic villain is first established by his terrifying presence… even before he is fully seen. Initially, he is someone we imagine committing or preparing his horrific crimes in a dismal apartment. Then, we catch only glimpses of him during a breathless chase, culminating with him holding Detective Mills at gunpoint.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

When John Doe reveals himself by surrendering to the authorities, shouting “Detective!!” in the police station lobby with bloodied hands, he immediately sends chills down the audience’s spine. From his interrogation to the suffocating climactic sequence in the desert (which might have made you pause the movie), his calm demeanor remains deeply unsettling… Especially since he is a rare villain who actually succeeds in the end.<\/p>\n

“I just needed to say the words and truly believe them”<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Kevin Spacey, who was a last-minute replacement for the role initially intended for R. Lee Ermey (who ended up playing the police captain), shared his experience of playing such a diabolical character. “All I can tell you is that during the car scene in the desert, among all those power lines, David Fincher kept telling me ‘Do the minimum,'”<\/i> Spacey revealed in an interview with Lex Fridman (as reported by Joblo<\/span>). “He reminded me ‘Remember, you are in control. You are going to win, and that knowledge should give you immense confidence.’ And I followed that advice.”<\/i><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“I think ‘Seven’ is a film where so many elements, right from the start, in the style, in how David built this terror, in how he made the audience understand that they were facing one of the most terrifying characters ever, really allowed me not to have to do much,”<\/i> Spacey concluded. “I just needed to say the words and truly believe them.”<\/i><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

To maintain the mystery of the killer’s identity, it was decided not to include Kevin Spacey’s name in the opening credits of “Seven.” However, his name appears first in the end credits. For his terrifying portrayal of John Doe, Kevin Spacey received the Best Supporting Actor award from both the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle.<\/p>\n
