When Zack Snyder set out to adapt Frank Miller’s graphic novel 300<\/i>, the stakes were high: to powerfully depict the legendary Battle of Thermopylae, where 300 Spartans heroically stood against the massive army of Persian King Xerxes. The film, highly stylized, is steeped in a unique graphic aesthetic and relies largely on the physical presence and charisma of its lead actor.<\/p>\n

Snyder saw in Gerard Butler<\/span> an ideal Leonidas. However, at Warner Bros. studios, confidence was less certain. Alan Horn, a top executive at the studio at the time, indeed had difficulty associating Butler with a warrior hero. To him, the actor was still primarily the Phantom from the Opera, a role he played in Joel Schumacher\u2019s musical adaptation released shortly before in 2004.<\/p>\n

But Gerard Butler<\/span>, determined, requested a personal meeting with Horn. And this face-to-face meeting would change everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cButler had done the Phantom of the Opera for us<\/i>,\u201d recounted Alan Horn<\/span> in a 2011 interview with the Hollywood Reporter. \u201cI said, \u2018I don\u2019t see him in the role.\u2019 To me, he was the phantom. A few days later, I get a call from Gerard Butler. He says, \u2018Can I come and see you?\u2019 So, he came, and he is really physically imposing. I knew from the Phantom of the Opera shooting that he smoked. I could even smell the cigarette on him.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

And then, Horn gave him an ultimatum. \u201cI said, \u2018Okay, you can have the role. But on one condition: that you quit smoking.\u2019 He asked, \u2018Are you serious?\u2019 I said yes. \u2018Give me your word, and the role is yours.\u2019 \u2018You have my word,\u2019 he replied.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

It was a long fight for Gerard Butler<\/span> who has often spoken about how hard it was to quit smoking. Repeated hypnosis sessions, medication treatments, electrostimulation: nothing was spared. He even tried up to 40 methods to free himself from his addiction. Despite several relapses, he eventually succeeded, though not without difficulty.<\/p>\n

The role of Leonidas required perfect physical condition and a certain lifestyle was essential to sculpt his now-iconic physique.<\/p>\n

Yet, despite already having an impressive build, the lead actor had to undergo intense, even extreme, training imposed by the studios: six daily hours, including two hours of CrossFit (combining weightlifting, running, and gymnastics), two hours of weight training, and another two dedicated to combat choreography.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have never been in such physical shape. In a way, I was ruining my body, but I looked great doing it!<\/i>\u201d, he told the Hollywood Reporter in 2021.<\/p>\n

A Challenging Shoot<\/h2>\n

The preparation for the actors of the film 300<\/span> \u2013 including Lena Headey, Michael Fassbender, and Dominic West \u2013 was intense, but the filming was no less challenging. Director Zack Snyder<\/span> shot nearly 90% of the film against a blue screen, pushing the actors to exhibit great imagination and adaptability.<\/p>\n
