Premiering tonight on France 2, the European series “The Count of Monte Cristo” has been a real challenge for its lead actor, as he shared with us in a recent interview.<\/p>\n

Sam Claflin takes on the role of the Count of Monte Cristo. The British actor, known for his roles in “Hunger Games” and “Peaky Blinders,” is a versatile performer who has dabbled in a variety of genres. This time, Claflin has stepped into the iconic shoes of French literary hero Edmond Dant\u00e8s. <\/p>\n

This European production features actors from multiple countries, including Ana Girardot from France, and was fortunate to have a substantial budget to fully explore Alexandre Dumas’s expansive novel. However, the filming process was not without its struggles for the teams, especially for Claflin, who revealed in our April meeting that he had never experienced such an exhausting shoot. <\/p>\n

Filming Out of Sequence<\/h2>\n

“I don’t think I was fully prepared. Taking on a role like Edmond Dant\u00e8s is a massive undertaking. He undergoes such radical changes throughout the story. And of course, we shot out of sequence. We started with the end of the series: essentially episodes 4 to 8. Then we did some of episode 3, followed by 2, and finally 1. It was quite bizarre. For the first four months, I was living in a kind of dark, angry sadness, filled with rage… So yes… it was really a roller coaster. But I was exhausted by the end.”<\/i><\/p>\n

For Claflin, under the direction of Danish filmmaker Bille August, the main challenge was to suppress his emotions: <\/p>\n

“He constantly reminded me not to show too much emotion… Because personally, my emotions are quite accessible. But with Edmond, all that shuts down. He’s so driven and focused on his revenge that love for Merc\u00e9d\u00e8s, all those things… he’s blinded by it all. And sometimes, Bille would say, ‘No, he must not cry. He doesn’t need to cry.’ The hardest part was feeling nothing, trying to be as cold as possible. Especially when you have someone as talented as Ana crying in front of you.”<\/i><\/p>\n
