Did you finally binge-watch all eight episodes of Bridgerton Season 4, only to feel a bit let down? Perhaps you’re disappointed that the romance between Lady Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell), the Bridgerton family matriarch, and Lord Marcus Anderson (Daniel Francis) didn’t fully materialize.<\/p>\n

Indeed, from the start, Bridgerton has focused heavily on the love lives of the large family\u2019s children. Violet, however, has been a widow for many years, her husband Edmund passing away while she was pregnant with their youngest, Hyacinthe. Throughout all this time, Violet never considered replacing the man she deeply loved and lost too soon.<\/p>\n

Yet, during Season 3, the arrival of Lord Marcus Anderson, the brother of her dear friend Lady Danbury, stirred feelings in her. For the first time since Edmund’s death, she felt attracted to another man. What began as a modest flirtation in Season 3 blossomed into a full-fledged relationship in Season 4.<\/p>\n

Violet finally opened her heart and succumbed to the allure of love. This led to a poignant scene where we see Violet, a mature woman, nervous about rediscovering intimacy with a new man. This moment was beautifully encapsulated when she invited Marcus to her room late one evening for tea, and quipped, “I am the tea<\/i>“.<\/p>\n

However, it turns out, this romance was not destined to last…<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Why Violet and Marcus\u2019s Love Story Won’t Continue<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

While Violet and Marcus were like lovebirds, their relationship harmonious and Marcus even proposing marriage\u2014which Violet accepted\u2014all came crashing down in the final episode.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Violet hesitates to announce their engagement to the rest of the family, leading Marcus to break things off, realizing he isn\u2019t her top priority. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“I always thought it wouldn’t end in marriage<\/i>“, says Jess Brownell, the showrunner, in an interview with People Magazine<\/span>, regarding Violet and Marcus’s relationship. “I thought that Violet \u2013 this being the first person she dated since her husband’s death \u2013 and I felt Marcus was a catalyst for her to realize that she still had much to discover about herself<\/i>.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Violet also has “unresolved issues with her children<\/i>” and she realizes she cannot fully address them if she marries Marcus. “I love their chemistry, but I think it’s a bit too soon for her to settle down and remarry<\/i>“, the writer explains.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Why It’s Not Sad<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

One might view the end of this story as sad for Violet, but that’s not the case. Although Bridgerton might be seen as a show where each season must end with a wedding, why should the mother be any different?<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It’s not that Violet is being punished or denied happiness. Quite the opposite. Her relationship with Marcus allowed her to reconnect with an aspect of her life she had neglected. Starting with her femininity. Rediscovering her sexuality, feeling desired and desirable after bearing eight children and years of widowhood is a true rebirth for the matriarch.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And this is exactly how Jess Brownell sees it, as she explains in another interview with RadioTimes<\/span>: “It seemed too soon for Violet, who was dating someone for the first time since her husband’s death, to remarry. I think she still has things to discover about herself, and that’s empowering. I’m thrilled she’s embarking on this journey in the coming seasons<\/i>.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

When she tells Marcus that she does not wish to marry him, Violet explains that she is rediscovering the youthful, fearless, passionate Violet of her younger days. Like her son Benedict (Luke Thompson), who avoided settling down before falling for Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha). It is this sudden and unexpected vigor, and the slight taste of the forbidden in having a secret affair, that Violet wishes to maintain.<\/p>\n

This represents a significant step towards emancipation for the one who is the guardian of the family and their morals.<\/p>\n
