What’s the Story About?<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

The film tells the remarkable love story between Philippe Croizon, a man deprived of all his limbs, and Suzana, a woman who brings him the energy and the possibility to dream again, including his dream of swimming across the English Channel.<\/p>\n

Untouchable and Unyielding<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

You may have already heard of Philippe Croizon. At 26 years old, the young laborer was electrocuted while replacing a TV antenna on the roof of his home on March 5, 1994. The first of three 20,000-volt electric shocks he received even caused a cardiac arrest, but he was revived by the second. Despite this, he spent two months in a coma at the burn center of the CHU of Tours, where his severely burned body had to be amputated of all four limbs to save his life, requiring hundreds of hours under anesthesia and multiple surgeries.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

After two years of rehabilitation, Philippe learned to walk and drive again, gradually transforming into a symbol of resilience and self-improvement. He wrote the book “I Decided to Live” using voice recognition software and later became the first quadruple amputee to swim the English Channel on September 18, 2010. Nearly sixteen years before “Pour le meilleur” was released, a film that revisits his story\u2014a topic previously untouched by cinema and television, despite their fondness for such compelling material.<\/p>\n

If you’re surprised that there hasn\u2019t been a feature film about his life until now, you share something in common with Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar, the director of “Pour le meilleur.” After being moved by a documentary about Philippe on France T\u00e9l\u00e9visions and realizing that no one had tackled his story for the big screen, she reached out to him. Fortunately, Philippe was familiar with some of her films like “Le Ciel attendra” and “Divertimento,” which helped make this biopic possible.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The challenge then was to find someone to play the lead role in this film, which addresses both disability and domestic violence through the character of Suzana Sabino (played by Lilly-Fleur Pointeaux), a key figure in Philippe’s second life who became his partner after his operations and his main support in all his endeavors, including his Channel swim. While the director could have cast Philippe himself, who had played his own role in the series “Vestiaires,” possibly blurring the line between fiction and reality, she ultimately decided to cast athlete Pierre Rabine, whom she contacted on Instagram in May 2024.<\/p>\n

In 2018, the life of Pierre, who would turn 27 on April 29, changed dramatically when he suffered an accident similar to Philippe\u2019s. While working as a temp on a construction site, a crane operator accidentally struck high voltage cables, creating an electric arc that severely burned Pierre internally and externally. Like Philippe, he was put into a lengthy coma during which his limbs were amputated one by one. Swimming also played a crucial role in his rehabilitation near Lorient.<\/p>\n

Returning to his native Vend\u00e9e, he joined the club in La Roche-sur-Yon where he trained six days a week for twenty hours. His total commitment earned him a silver medal at the French Championships in Angers in 2022 in the 50m breaststroke category, but he failed to qualify for the Paris Games two years later, unable to meet the minimum requirements despite his efforts. However, fate had it that cinema would be his next arena of success, as the offer from Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar came while he was preparing for the qualifiers.<\/p>\n

Philippe Croizon, Pierre Rabine: A Shared Struggle<\/h2>\n

Using prosthetics similar to those worn by Philippe Croizon in 2010, Pierre Rabine reenacts his predecessor’s feat in a feature film dedicated to the maternal grandparents of the director (including her paraplegic grandfather, who founded an institute for disabled people).
