After World War II, Jean Gabin struggled to reclaim his position in the film industry. In 1959, the actor openly discussed his career slump and the movie that ultimately led him back to success.<\/p>\n

In the mid-1950s, Jean Gabin reclaimed a spot that seemed to have slipped away: that of a major star in French cinema. However, just a few years earlier, there was no guarantee that the actor would be able to reconnect with the success he had enjoyed before the war.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

His biographer Andr\u00e9 Brunelin would later refer to this period as a “gray phase,” a time when Gabin struggled to find roles that suited his new age and physical appearance. This transition was particularly challenging as the public still remembered the actor as he had been years earlier.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

From leading man to silver-haired actor<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Before World War II, Gabin was at his peak, starring in films like La B\u00eate humaine. He then left France for the United States before joining the war effort\u2014a significant chapter in his life that we’ve previously covered.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

When he returned to French cinema, time had taken its toll, and his appearance had changed. In 1959, interviewed by L\u00e9on Zitrone, Jean Gabin explained simply how this transformation had profoundly affected his approach to his career.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“I had left in good shape, so to speak, I went to war when I was about 35-36 years old, and at that time, I was still playing leading men. I came back with white hair. And that gave me complexes, having white hair. Because I could no longer think about playing the roles I had played before the war. So I searched a bit, made a few films that were not very successful. And you know, the public is sometimes demanding, they probably wanted to find me as they had left me, but I was ten years older, and it showed physically and on my face (…).”<\/p>\n

This difficulty in reinventing himself is directly reflected in Gabin’s role choices. Between 1945 and 1954, the actor alternated between characters that suited his new stature and others that still echoed the popular figures that had contributed to his success before the war.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A decade spent searching for his new place<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

His physical appearance and age now allowed him to portray socially established men, grand bourgeois or powerful industrialists, notably in La Marie du port, La V\u00e9rit\u00e9 sur B\u00e9b\u00e9 Donge, or Le Sang \u00e0 la t\u00eate.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

However, Gabin did not abandon the characters from more modest backgrounds that had shaped part of his image. He thus becomes a locomotive driver in La Nuit est mon royaume, a carpenter in Le Plaisir, or a boxing coach in L\u2019Air de Paris.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The career slump was significant enough that in 1948, Jean Gabin did not even make a single film. An exceptional situation for someone who, outside of the war years, had worked non-stop since the beginning of his career.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It would ultimately take a few meetings and especially a character perfectly suited to the post-war Gabin for things to start moving again.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The film that changed everything<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

A first encouraging sign came with Au-del\u00e0 des grilles (1949) by Ren\u00e9 Cl\u00e9ment. But it was especially Touchez pas au grisbi (1954), directed by Jacques Becker, that definitively put Jean Gabin back in the spotlight.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The actor himself believed that luck had played a decisive role in this comeback:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“I made a film with [Ren\u00e9] Cl\u00e9ment, which was called Au-del\u00e0 des grilles, which was a success. And then I had the great fortune\u2014because there is a huge element of luck in this profession\u2014of making Touchez pas au grisbi. It was somewhat a response to what had been P\u00e9p\u00e9 le Moko back in the day, with 15 or 20 years added, the film worked, and it restarted (…).”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The comparison with P\u00e9p\u00e9 le Moko is revealing. With Touchez pas au grisbi, Gabin no longer sought to artificially regain the young man he had been; he could now use his age, face, and presence to build a new cinematic figure.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A second career that never stopped<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

The film’s success opened up a new, particularly fruitful period for him. Starting in 1955, Jean Gabin notably met Michel Audiard, who would write some of his most memorable lines. A crucial encounter that we’ve already told you about.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This time, the actor had found roles that fully corresponded to the man he had become. After nearly a decade of uncertainties, Gabin reestablished himself as one of the key figures in French cinema, a position he would hold until his death on November 15, 1976.<\/p>\n
