Majid’s parents, who were of Algerian descent, disappeared during the massacre of October 17, 1961, in Paris. After this tragedy, Georges’ parents considered adopting the child. However, Georges, then a young boy himself, did not want Majid around and told lies to push him away from the family.<\/p>\n

As a result, Majid was sent away, and their lives took radically different paths. As an adult, Georges buried this episode, as if he could erase his actions and their impact on Majid’s life. The appearance of the videos suddenly forces him to confront this past.<\/p>\n

And it is precisely at the moment when this confrontation seems like it might provide some answers that “Hidden” strikes the viewer hard.<\/p>\n

A Death That Comes Without Warning<\/h2>\n

Majid asks Georges to meet him in his apartment. Nothing in the setup really prepares you for what is about to happen. There is no music to build tension, no quick cuts, or clear signs to anticipate the unfolding drama. Haneke maintains the cool, detached tone that characterizes the rest of the film.<\/p>\n

Then, in a matter of seconds, everything changes: in front of Georges, Majid suddenly slashes his own throat with a knife.<\/p>\n

This lack of resolution is an integral part of “Hidden.” The director prefers to confront his character\u2014and the audience\u2014with the consequences of the past rather than building his narrative around a final revelation that explains everything.<\/p>\n

This is also what contributes to the deeply uncomfortable nature of the film. Georges’ guilt doesn’t vanish just because he refuses to acknowledge it, and some wounds continue to exist long after those who caused them have decided to forget.<\/p>\n
