G\u00e9rard Lanvin humorously recalls the filming of “Marche \u00e0 l\u2019ombre” in bustling New York, where the crowd, intrigued by the massive setup, evidently expected entirely different stars to appear…<\/p>\n

With over 6.1 million admissions in France, “Marche \u00e0 l\u2019ombre” holds a special place in G\u00e9rard Lanvin\u2019s career. Released in 1984, this comedy is indeed his biggest box-office hit, surpassing other popular films of his such as “Les Sp\u00e9cialistes” or “Camping.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The film also marked Michel Blanc\u2019s directorial debut. The actor and director co-starred with G\u00e9rard Lanvin, playing Denis and Fran\u00e7ois respectively, two characters with radically different temperaments yet inseparable.<\/p>\n

From Wandering to Broadway<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Fran\u00e7ois dreams of making a living through music and travels the roads with Denis, a particularly anxious companion who contrasts with his personality. Their misadventures will take them far from their everyday lives, all the way to the United States and the streets of New York.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A sequence that clearly left an impression on an entire generation. Invited in April 2025 by Laurent Delahousse on “20h30 le dimanche,” G\u00e9rard Lanvin revisited the behind-the-scenes of this Broadway shot.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The journalist, who describes “Marche \u00e0 l\u2019ombre” as a film \u201cthat became a cult classic from generation to generation,\u201d first nostalgically recalls his own memories as a viewer: “It was iconic for us, teenagers, a kind of escape and dream of elsewhere, when we see you with the bundle, and you are on Broadway, both of you…”<\/p>\n

A Nighttime Shoot in the Heart of New York<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

G\u00e9rard Lanvin especially remembers the conditions in which this ambitious scene was filmed: “That steadycam shot, where suddenly, from boxes, we move over to the city of New York, with a producer who was determined to shoot at night to take advantage of the Broadway lights…”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

To facilitate the team\u2019s work, part of the neighborhood was secured. This naturally attracted the attention of passersby, intrigued by the scale of the setup on the street.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And these onlookers quickly assumed that only huge American stars could justify such a deployment. In retrospect, G\u00e9rard Lanvin still finds amusement in the misunderstanding: “The area is locked down, there are thousands of people seeing a pretty significant shoot. Everyone probably assumed it was De Niro and Al Pacino.”<\/p>\n

A Letdown for the Spectators<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

But instead of the two cinematic legends, the crowd ultimately discovered G\u00e9rard Lanvin and Michel Blanc filming a scene far less spectacular than expected. A situation that Lanvin recounts with much self-deprecation: “And there I am, seeing guys extremely disappointed to see two ordinary fools passing a banana and a dollar.”<\/p>\n

A memory all the more delightful as “Marche \u00e0 l\u2019ombre” went on to become a massive success in France. In addition to its 6.1 million viewers, Michel Blanc\u2019s debut feature earned two C\u00e9sar nominations: Best First Work and Most Promising Actress for Sophie Duez.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Forty-two years after its release, this New York escapade of Fran\u00e7ois and Denis remains one of the emblematic sequences of a film that has enduringly marked French comedy.<\/p>\n
