Start Your Year with a Laugh: Must-Watch French Comedy on TV Tonight!

Every day, AlloCiné suggests a movie to watch or rewatch on TV. Tonight’s pick: a highly successful family comedy penned by the creator of the “Serial (Bad) Weddings” series.

14-year-old Sami was happily living with his friends in his housing project in Chalon-sur-Saône. Unfortunately, fate abruptly uproots him from this paradise and thrusts him into the bourgeois hell of Neuilly-sur-Seine! This storyline belongs to the delightful family comedy ‘Neuilly Yo Mama!’, which debuted in theaters in 2009. We’re inviting you to (re)discover it this Friday evening on TFX to start the year off right.

Directed by Gabriel Julien-Laferrière and written by Philippe de Chauveron (who later created the ‘Serial (Bad) Weddings’ series), the film ‘Neuilly Yo Mama!’ is packed with charm. It’s particularly humorous and features sharp dialogues. This bold comedy, which plays with stereotypes and echoes ‘Life Is a Long Quiet River’ by Etienne Chatiliez—a classic in its own right—is genuinely entertaining.

‘Neuilly Yo Mama!’ is led by a cast that truly enjoys their roles, with young Samy Seghir at the forefront. The film also includes some memorable cameo appearances by Josiane Balasko as a school principal, Ramzy Bedia, and Valérie Lemercier.

Over 2.5 Million Box Office Admissions

The idea for ‘Neuilly Yo Mama!’ came to director and producer Djamel Bensalah while he was on the set of ‘Big City’. “To relax during filming, I think about other movies and write different stories,” he explains. “While working with Samy Seghir and Jérémy Denisty on ‘Big City’, I thought it would be a shame not to make a contemporary film with these two young actors. I’ve long wanted to create something akin to ‘Life Is a Long Quiet River’—which I consider a masterpiece of comedy—or a modern-day ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’.”
