First noticed in Boris Lojkine’s “The Story of Souleymane,” Abou Sangaré, who won the César for Most Promising Actor in 2025, has landed a new role in the upcoming film “Red Gold,” with filming set to begin soon.
First showcased at Cannes, Boris Lojkine’s “The Story of Souleymane” captivated both French media and audiences, drawing over 654,000 viewers. The film particularly highlighted its lead actor, Abou Sangaré, who arrived in France at age 15 and faced a mandatory deportation order. By 2025, he had received the César for Most Promising Actor.
In Search of the Missing
Today, Abou Sangaré is set to appear in a new film, “Red Gold” by Mathieu Volpe as reported by Cineuropa. The story follows 45-year-old Mariama from Senegal who arrives in a Southern Italian agricultural worker’s ghetto. While she claims to be looking for work, she is actually investigating the disappearance of someone.
The cast includes Belgian actress of Senegalese origin Fatou Hane as Mariama, alongside Abou Sangaré whose role has not been specified, and Seydou Sarr, a breakout star from Matteo Garrone’s “I, Captain.” The production is scheduled to start on August 3rd in Bari, Italy.
Lacking a Passport
Recently, Abou Sangaré was back in the film headlines. Initially considered for a role in “Dumas – Black Devil,” a major production by Pathé directed by Ladj Ly (Les Misérables), he was unable to participate due to not having a valid passport, preventing him from attending the shoot. Ouest-France and Le Courrier Picard reported that he was living in Amiens and working at a tool and equipment rental company in Paris.
“Red Gold” marks his first project following the success of “The Story of Souleymane.” The film, as of now, does not have a release date.
