Pope praises Cuba & calls for liberation from imperialism

Pope Francis has expressed love for Cuba in an interview with Univision.

He stated, “I love the Cuban people very much. I have good human relations with Cuban people and also, I confess, I have a human relationship with Raúl Castro”.

The pontiff added, “Cuba is a symbol, Cuba has a great history” and “probing dialogues are being held to shorten the distance” between the island and the United States.

The comments follow a prior interview last week with Argentina’s state news agency Telam, in which he said, “Latin America is still on that slow path of struggle, the path of San Martín and Bolívar’s dream of unity… the region has always been a victim, and it will be a victim until it completes its liberation from exploitative imperialisms.”

When the Univision interviewers asked him about accusations of being a ‘Communist’, he replied, “Certain highly ideological media groups that are dedicated to ideologizing the position of others, sometimes do not know how to distinguish what communism is from what nazism is, from what populism is.”

Clips from the Univison interview were posted to twitter by Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez.
