Venezuela to Launch its own Social Media Network
President Nicolas Maduro has revealed that Venezuela will be launching its own social network amid increasing censorship of the airwaves and online platforms by several governments corporations. The revelation was heard at this evening’s Productive Wednesdays activity which was dedicated to the 6th anniversary of the Local Committees for Supply and Production (CLAP) program.
“..I can’t tell you yet, Venezuela is going to surprise the world with something that we are going to launch on Friday and they are going to be stunned. The world will be stunned. Venezuela is catching up with the world’s social networks with our own social network. Venezuela is going to have its own social network for Venezuela and for the world. I say no more. Just wait for its activation and announcement on Friday.”
In recent years, Venezuelan state media was heavily censored across major social media platforms, particularly on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Venezuela’s Venezolana de Televisión – VTV Canal 8, the main state media channel had to move its streaming and videos to Daily Motion. Other media accounts from the country with significant online following, including those belonging to media figures and other individuals, have been restricted and suspended on Twitter.
