The upcoming animated series from the “Dragon Ball Super” universe will soon be broadcast in France on ADN and Crunchyroll platforms.
The original series delighted anime fans in the early 90s, and continued to captivate subsequent generations. Although Dragon Ball Z concluded in 1996, it wasn’t until nearly two decades later that a sequel emerged—excluding Dragon Ball GT, the unofficial continuation released in 1997.
The Epic Return of the Saga in 2013
The beloved characters of Dragon Ball made a triumphant return in a new universe titled Dragon Ball Super, introduced through the theatrical release of the movie Battle of Gods in 2013. In this installment, Goku and his friends encounter Beerus, a god of destruction intent on annihilating our planet. To stand a chance against their foe, they must unearth new sources of energy deep within themselves.
Although this movie reignited interest in the saga (followed by three more films and two animated series), Battle of Gods is still considered one of the weaker entries among the roughly 20 feature films in the saga. Critics have particularly highlighted its subpar animation quality, overly simplistic story, and an excess of action and transformations at the expense of coherence, despite involvement from the manga’s creator, the late Akira Toriyama, in crafting the screenplay.
The Series That Might Reconcile Fans with the 2013 Movie?
Over a decade after the movie’s release, Toei, the producer of the saga, has decided to make amends with fans by offering a new version. Retitled Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, this remake is presented as a mini-series featuring brand new scenes and a revamped storyline. In short: an enhanced version of the 2013 movie.
And fans can rest assured, this new anime is just a precursor to the upcoming continuation of the Dragon Ball Super series. On hiatus since 2018, the animated series has not yet adapted the entirety of the manga, and after nearly ten years of waiting, fans will finally get to see the next chapter in the adventures of Goku and Vegeta.
Until then, fans of the franchise can mark their calendars for October 11th, when Dragon Ball Super: Beerus will debut on ADN and Crunchyroll platforms, releasing one episode each week.
