As the release date for his new sci-fi movie nears, Steven Spielberg is already pondering his next venture, which might just be a western, a pivotal genre in cinema that the iconic director has yet to tackle.
He’s responsible for some of the most famous films in the history of cinema, particularly in the realms of science fiction and war movies, yet there’s one genre Steven Spielberg hasn’t fully embraced: the western. This could soon change as the 79-year-old filmmaker disclosed last week at the SXSW Festival (via The Playlist) that he is currently developing a feature film in this quintessential cinematic genre. Although his upcoming film is scheduled to hit French theaters on June 10, 2026, Spielberg has not revealed any details about the plot of the western but promised it will be “mind-blowing”.
Horses and Guns, but No Stereotypes!
This news is sure to excite fans of the genre, which had its golden age during the classic era of Hollywood. Spielberg specifically mentioned that there would be “no stereotypes” or “clichés”. Of course, you can still expect to see “horses” and “guns” in this film, which might be shot in Texas.
Unfortunately, there are no further details available about this intriguing project. However, it’s worth noting that one of the masters of the western genre, John Ford, appeared in a scene from Spielberg’s most recent film, The Fabelmans, portrayed by none other than David Lynch. In that scene, the director of The Searchers gives invaluable advice to the protagonist. This encounter, which indeed took place, profoundly impacted Spielberg and directing a western might be a way to come full circle.
But for now, Spielberg has returned to the theme of alien invasion with Disclosure Day, starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, and Colman Domingo, set to premiere in theaters in less than three months. Here’s the latest trailer:
