James Cameron Almost Directed This Iconic ’90s Sci-Fi Blockbuster Instead of Spielberg!

What if “Jurassic Park” had been directed by James Cameron? The Hollywood icon was indeed considered for directing the project and imagines his film… as an intergalactic horror!

James Cameron is unquestionably one of the most legendary directors of all time. With blockbusters like Titanic, Avatar, and Terminator under his belt, he has become the second highest-grossing director in history, amassing over $8.7 billion in box office receipts.

In a recent interview last November, he discussed the release of the third installment of his now legendary saga, Avatar: The Tides of Power. During this interview, Cameron also revealed that he was almost at the helm of Jurassic Park before the project was handed over to Steven Spielberg. He confirms, however, that Spielberg “was the right man for the job,” and admits that his version of the film would have been markedly different.

Cameron’s Nightmarish Vision

“Not me,” he stated (via Collider). “Because I would have made it too terrifying and not suitable for those under 17. It would have been Aliens with dinosaurs.” In 1986, James Cameron took over from Ridley Scott to direct Aliens, the sequel to Alien (1979). These two films are considered some of the most influential works of science fiction horror of all time. While Cameron has become more well-known for his science fiction films in recent years, thanks to the phenomenal success of the Avatar franchise, he proved with Aliens that he could also master the art of horror.

Spielberg: The Perfect Choice for a Timeless Blockbuster

Steven Spielberg was undoubtedly the ideal choice to direct Jurassic Park. The original film received critical acclaim and spawned a franchise that continues to produce new films to this day.

Earlier in 2025, Jurassic World: Renaissance hit theaters and closed its run with over $850 million in global box office receipts. Although the franchise has come a long way from its beginnings in 1993, it continues to produce some of Hollywood’s most entertaining blockbusters.

Jurassic World: Renaissance is now available on VOD, along with the rest of the saga. The original film (and its sequel), are also available for streaming on Prime Video.
