Rachel Lindsay Greenbush, known for playing young Carrie Ingalls (who memorably falls in the show’s opening credits) in “Little House on the Prairie,” reflects on her challenging departure from the series.
Over 182 episodes of “Little House on the Prairie,” Rachel Lindsay Greenbush portrayed Carrie Ingalls, often seen hiding in her mother’s skirts or playing alongside her sisters Mary and Laura. However, when it came time to exit the series, which continued without her, the separation was tough.
By season 9, the show’s creators shifted focus to Laura Ingalls and her husband Almanzo James Wilder’s family life, moving away from the Ingalls family narrative. This change led to diminished roles for the actors playing Charles and Caroline, and Rachel Lindsay Greenbush, who played Carrie, was asked to leave the series.
“It was really very difficult for me”
For Greenbush, the departure was a long-term shock, as she shared in December on the “Little House 50” podcast (via People), which revisits each episode of the western series:
“I don’t think I realized the impact it had on me until I was much older and started on a path of reconciliation and self-understanding. Everyone went their separate ways, and I didn’t see anyone from the show. It was really very difficult for me because I didn’t realize how connected I was to those people; it took me years.”

It’s important to remember that Rachel Greenbush left the series after eight years of filming with the same crew and actors, creating a strong team spirit, especially as she also attended school on set with other child actors when not filming. Her departure at merely 12 years old was particularly harsh.
“It’s almost like mourning, but I refused to acknowledge it because I kept telling myself: ‘That’s the business. It comes with the territory.’ You form deep, really intense connections working every day with each other, and when it ends, you’re supposed to say: ‘OK, that was cool, goodbye.’ And it’s really hard.”
Carrie Ingalls was portrayed by two actresses
During the filming of the series, the role of little Carrie was played by twin sisters, Rachel Lindsay Greenbush and Sidney Greenbush. Due to regulations limiting screen time for young actors, having two people portray the same child allowed for more screen time for the character.
Interestingly, in the credits of the series, Rachel and Sidney were listed under one name: Lindsay Sidney Greenbush, which preserved the illusion for the audience that a single actress played the role.
