If you’re a fan of “Little House on the Prairie,” you’ll enjoy this heartfelt and amusing story shared by actor Patrick Labyorteaux, who played Andy Garvey in the beloved series.
A quintessential classic, “Little House on the Prairie” captivated many with the lives of the Ingalls family in the small town of Walnut Grove. Among the friends of Charles and others was Andy Garvey, portrayed by Patrick Labyorteaux.
Brothers on the Prairie
Back in 1977, the young actor was thrilled when he landed the role after auditioning in front of Michael Landon himself. However, filming wasn’t always smooth sailing for Patrick. About a year after he joined, his younger brother also made his way onto the show.
His name is Matthew Labyorteaux, who would play the Ingalls’ adopted son, Albert. In a recent interview with BuzzFeed on July 22, the 60-year-old actor recalled the occasional challenges of working closely with his brother. “He’s my brother. Sometimes we got along well, sometimes I couldn’t stand him. If you have a sibling, you’ll understand,” he shared.

“The funniest thing was that it was unique, unlike any other show. Melissa Gilbert [Laura] and Jonathan Gilbert [Willie Oleson] were siblings, and we had several sets of twins, including Carrie and Grace. Many child extras, like those in the classroom and church, were children of the crew members,” revealed Patrick Labyorteaux.
A Strong Bond
“So, on ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ it wasn’t really surprising to be on set with another family member. That said, I was really glad that my brother and I could do the show together. Being in the same series and doing all our press conferences and appearances together was really helpful,” the actor admitted.
Patrick then talked about his and Matthew’s adoption by Ron Labyorteaux and Frances Mae Marshall. “My brother and I were adopted at different times. I was adopted at 9 months and Matt at 10 months. The big question from the press was: What was life like in an orphanage? I was nine months old, I don’t know!”, he explained.
As for working on set, it was really great. If we were filming scenes together, we could rehearse at home, which saved us a lot of time.
“Therefore, my brother and I really enjoyed it. As for working on set, it was really great. If we were filming scenes together, we could rehearse at home, which saved us a lot of time,” Patrick Labyorteaux concluded.
Patrick appeared in 44 episodes of “Little House on the Prairie” between 1977 and 1981. As for his brother Matthew, he appeared in 88 episodes from 1976 to 1983.
