In a recent interview with Legend, Fabrice Luchini shared his experiences working with Johnny Hallyday on the film “Jean-Philippe,” praising the singer’s “genius of common sense.”
Do you remember the comedy “Jean-Philippe,” where Fabrice Luchini starred alongside Johnny Hallyday? Released over 20 years ago, the film narrates the story of an average executive and die-hard Johnny fan who awakens in an alternate reality where the singer does not exist. Feeling lost and bereft, he embarks on a quest to find Jean-Philippe Smet and discover his fate in this parallel universe. When he finally finds him, Jean-Philippe is just a bowling alley owner, a regular guy who never became a star. From there, Fabrice’s sole mission is to revive his idol and awaken the “Johnny” within Jean-Philippe.
“He said amazing things. I kept making him talk”
In a recent interview given to Legend, Fabrice Luchini discussed his collaboration with the iconic singer on this well-received film (average rating of 3.5 out of 5) that drew nearly 1.3 million viewers to theaters. Luchini vividly recalls the impactful moments spent together.
“I really tapped into Johnny’s genius,” Luchini tells journalist Guillaume Pley. “Our relationship lasted three months. Johnny Hallyday is a genius of common sense, naivety, and childlike simplicity. He said amazing things. I kept making him talk. It was like Socrates, I was birthing all his thoughts.”
“It’s sheer genius”
Luchini fondly remembers a specific moment with the youth idol, who will soon be portrayed by Benjamin Voisin in a biopic about the rocker: “One night, during a long break, I asked him, ‘By the way, Johnny, have you seen any of the rushes from the movie we’ve been shooting for a month and a half?’ And he’s capable of responding with this astonishing line: ‘I don’t really like rushes because it’s always the same scene, especially since I’ve already acted it out.’ That’s sheer genius.”
And what does Johnny think of Fabrice Luchini? In 2006, AlloCiné had the privilege of meeting the star during the release of Jean-Philippe, and he had nothing but praise for the actor. “Watch out, he’s a phenomenon. He takes a bottle, uses it as a microphone, and off he goes,” laughed the star in our interview. “But beyond this gentle madness, the most important thing for me is that Fabrice always maintains a lot of elegance in his ‘over-the-top’ approach.”
