God of War Star Slams Amazon Series After Kratos Recast: ‘What Are They Thinking?’

In the God of War universe, there is a voice unlike any other. Known to the general public for his role in the “Stargate SG-1” series, Christopher Judge is also a successful voice actor. His most famous role is undoubtedly that of Kratos, the protagonist of the God of War video games, which he also portrays through performance capture.

Why Aren’t the Game’s Creators Involved in Writing the Series?

The live-action series will not use him for the role. Dave Bautista will play the Spartan warrior, replacing Ryan Hurst who was severely injured during filming. The former Stargate star remains deeply connected to the franchise and does not hesitate to express his opinions on the adaptation project.

At a fan convention in Boston, Christopher Judge criticized Amazon for not involving the game’s writers (via RadioTimes): “What are they thinking? These guys have been immersed in this universe for 20 years. But someone else is better positioned to know what we’re talking about?”

In reality, the Writers Guild of America does not include video game writers. Therefore, there is no bridge between the two mediums, and the production had to hire writers who are members of the Writers Guild of America. The game’s writers aren’t even allowed to rewrite the scripts or intervene in any way in the writing of the program.

Christopher Judge is Not at All Jealous of Dave Bautista

Some fans interpreted Judge’s remarks as a way for him to criticize not being cast as Kratos. On his X account, the American actor clarified:

“As my kids say, I’m an old man. I really hope they find someone as great as Ryan (Hurst, his comments were before the announcement of Dave Bautista’s casting). I was mostly talking about our writers and the game developers. I want them to get the love and respect they deserve (…). No disrespect to TV writers, because I’ve worked with the best on Stargate.”

Currently paused, the filming of God of War will resume in October, with the mission to reshoot all of Ryan Hurst’s scenes with the new Kratos actor. The shooting will span several months, as the goal is to simultaneously produce the first two seasons of the program.

The God of War series does not yet have a release date on Prime Video.
