Rising Global Concerns as Donald Trump Secures Second Presidential Term

Stay tuned as this story unfolds for more updates…

Donald Trump, the former U.S. President known for his authoritarian tendencies, has prevailed over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in a significant political comeback. This victory occurs nearly four years after Trump’s encouragement of a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol, aiming to overturn his loss in the 2020 elections.

Trump’s triumph in the 2024 elections over Vice President Harris was clear-cut. According to current projections, Trump is set to conquer all seven key swing states—Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, and Nevada. This outcome has been described by one media outlet as a “dramatic rout” of the Democratic Party.

In a victory speech delivered in Florida, Trump declared his win as an “unprecedented and powerful mandate.” He indicated a robust intent to fulfill his controversial promises, including the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants, prosecuting and using military force against political adversaries, dismantling environmental regulations on polluting industries, and further reducing taxes for wealthy individuals and large corporations.

“My administration will operate on a straightforward principle,” Trump stated, acknowledging the financial support from the world’s wealthiest individual for his campaign. “Promises made, promises kept.”

The Republican Party’s strengthened position, having seized the U.S. Senate, further empowers Trump’s legislative agenda. Notable losses for the Democrats included Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) to luxury car dealer Bernie Moreno, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice securing the seat vacated by retiring Sen. Joe Manchin, and Sen. Jon Tester (D-Montana) losing to his Republican challenger.

As of now, the control of the U.S. House of Representatives is still undecided, with over 100 races pending, according to The Associated Press.

“If Republicans gain complete control of Capitol Hill, there will be minimal restraint on Trump’s executive powers,” noted Financial Times columnist Edward Luce. He also referenced a Supreme Court decision from July granting Trump considerable immunity for his presidential actions, effectively giving him a “judicial blank check.”

“America has definitely turned a critical corner,” Luce further commented. “It’s naive to think Trump didn’t mean his threats against his adversaries, and it’s equally unrealistic to expect him to be hindered by the nation’s political divide. Trump has been granted the authority to reshape the U.S. in profoundly disruptive ways, and there’s no turning back from the monumental impact of this election.”

Internationally, the reaction to Trump’s victory has sparked concern. In Israel, the far-right faction, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—who has led a severe offensive in the Gaza Strip supported by Trump during his campaign—celebrated Trump’s return to power.

Netanyahu congratulated Trump, “Congratulations on the greatest comeback in history! Your historic return to the White House heralds a fresh start for America and a reaffirmation of the strong alliance between Israel and the U.S.”

The Peace & Justice Project, based in the United Kingdom, expressed grave concerns, stating, “the world is a more dangerous place today.” They highlighted the risks to the planet, marginalized groups, refugees, and Palestinians enduring harsh conditions under Israeli policies, emphasizing the need for global solidarity and an alternative vision of hope and unity.

Similarly, Sophie Bolt, the general secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, voiced alarms about the increased global security risks, especially concerning nuclear tensions. “The world faces much greater danger with Trump in control of the nuclear codes,” Bolt remarked, citing potential conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region.

A statement from Human Rights Watch echoed these sentiments, describing a second Trump presidency as a severe threat to human rights both in the U.S. and globally. “Donald Trump has blatantly expressed his intentions to infringe on the rights of millions in the United States,” said Tirana Hassan, HRW’s executive director. She stressed the importance of independent organizations and civil society to vigilantly monitor and hold Trump’s administration accountable for any abuses.

As of now, Kamala Harris, who assumed the Democratic nomination after Joe Biden withdrew earlier in July, has not yet made a public address following the results.
