Every day, AlloCiné offers a movie recommendation to catch on TV. Tonight’s pick: Sam Mendes helms the 23rd James Bond film.
In 2008, Marc Forster directed one of the least liked James Bond films in the series: Quantum of Solace. Following this disappointment, the director of World War Z handed over the reins to Sam Mendes (known for 1917, American Beauty, Revolutionary Road, etc.) to take charge of the 23rd installment of the 007 series.
Thus, in 2012, Skyfall was released, marking Daniel Craig’s third appearance as Bond. The film features the iconic spy on a mission to save MI6, and more specifically M (Judi Dench), whose authority is challenged by Mallory (Ralph Fiennes), the new chairman of the ISC, the intelligence and security committee.
As MI6 faces an unprecedented dual threat, both from within and without, James Bond must operate covertly. With the assistance of M’s colleague and assistant, Eve (Naomi Harris), he sets out to track down Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem), whose lethal secret agenda he must uncover at all costs.
A Massive International Success
With ratings of 4.2 out of 5 from AlloCiné users and 4 out of 5 from the press, the 23rd James Bond film is considered the best of the series! Additionally, it also tops the charts at the box office, pulling in $1.1 billion globally.
Skyfall has a lot going for it: a stellar cast featuring Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem, Naomi Harris, and Bérénice Marlohe, a captivating soundtrack with Adele’s now-iconic Bond song, a thrilling plot, and spectacular settings.
In addition to being one of the highest-rated James Bond films, Skyfall won two Oscars and two BAFTAs and received twelve nominations at various film festivals. Riding on this wave of undeniable success, Sam Mendes decided to continue with the franchise, directing Spectre three years later.
This 24th and penultimate James Bond film stars Léa Seydoux, Monica Bellucci, and Christoph Waltz, while the equally famous soundtrack is by Sam Smith.
And it’s safe to say that it also enjoyed significant box office success, selling 4.9 million tickets in France alone and grossing $880 million internationally, making it the second most successful film in the series. Undoubtedly, Sam Mendes has a deep understanding of the James Bond formula!
