With a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel expected to commence possibly by Sunday, Senator Bernie Sanders made a public statement on Friday. He expressed his approval that the Israeli security cabinet has agreed to the ceasefire but pointed out that the accord was essentially identical to the one that Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu and his radical administration had previously declined in May of the previous year.
Since that initial proposal, over 10,000 lives have been lost, and the plight of both hostages and civilians in Gaza has only worsened, Sanders noted.
This past Wednesday, President Biden revealed the breakthrough, stating, “this is the ceasefire agreement I proposed last spring.”
Furthermore, the independent senator from Vermont stressed that Americans need to “confront our involvement in this tragic episode.” He criticized the U.S. government for its role, stating it “permitted this massive atrocity to persist by continuously supplying weapons to Netanyahu and not applying significant pressure.”
Since the onset of Israel’s military actions in Gaza in October 2023 following an attack by Hamas, the U.S. has provided Israel with at least $17.9 billion in military aid. Additionally, in early January, the State Department notified Congress about a forthcoming $8 billion arms sale.
According to local health authorities in Gaza, the death toll in the region has exceeded 46,000. However, a new peer-reviewed study estimates the number of deaths due to Israel’s offensive in Gaza to be around 64,260, mostly comprising civilian men, women, and children, from October 7, 2023, to June 30, 2024. This number is substantially higher than what has been officially reported by the health ministry of the enclave.
Various human rights groups have accused Israel of committing genocide or genocidal acts in Gaza, and the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli defense chief Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Additionally, an arrest warrant has been issued for Hamas leader Ibrahim Al-Masri for purported crimes against humanity,
In his remarks on Friday, Sanders labeled the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israel as “barbaric” and affirmed that Israel “certainly had the right to defend itself against Hamas.”
Yet, he articulated that Israel’s response was not merely a defensive act against Hamas but has escalated into a full-scale war targeting the entire Palestinian populace.
