Tonight on Netflix: Steven Spielberg’s 4.2-Rated Thriller, One of the 2000s’ Best!

Back in 2003, which now feels like 23 years ago, Steven Spielberg returned to the director’s chair with a remarkable project: Catch Me If You Can. After directing the sci-fi movies A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Minority Report, the American filmmaker presented us with a piece firmly rooted in reality, based on a true story.

In this film, Spielberg transports us to the 1960s, alongside young Frank Abagnale Jr., a master of deception. He managed to swindle $2.5 million and found himself on the FBI’s list as one of the top ten most-wanted individuals in the United States.

An Extraordinary Character

To bring Catch Me If You Can to life, Spielberg cast Hollywood’s rising star, Titanic’s Leonardo DiCaprio, who was at the height of his early fame. DiCaprio perfectly portrayed Frank Abagnale Jr., delivering one of the finest performances of his career.

Opposite him, veteran actor Tom Hanks also shines as the determined FBI agent. With this major work of the early 2000s, Spielberg successfully mixed family drama, a tense thriller, and pure comedy. Seldom has a feature film been so brilliant in blending genres.

Besides its two main stars, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, Spielberg carefully selected a supporting cast. He enlisted renowned American actors such as Christopher Walken and Martin Sheen, who were collaborating with him for the first time. French actress Nathalie Baye also joined the cast, playing the role of Frank’s mother.

Unforgettable Music

Beyond the stellar acting and superb directing by Steven Spielberg, the film’s score by maestro John Williams is also noteworthy! For this project, the composer revisited a style he had explored in his youth: jazz. Williams had been an assistant to Henry Mancini, a specialist in this type of film music.

Additionally, the fantastic opening credits of Catch Me If You Can, set to a jazzy tune by John Williams, were created by French duo Olivier Kuntzel and Florence Deygas. This elegant sequence was designed as a tribute to the animated opening credits seen in some 1960s films.

The duo also drew inspiration from one of the masters of the genre, Saul Bass. “We felt that Spielberg wanted a sequence created by an artist rather than a studio, aiming to preserve the charm of the handmade. It’s a very rare opportunity today. The result isn’t perfect, but its imperfections lend the sequence a personal and authentic touch”, explained Florence Deygas.

Finally, it’s worth noting that in Frank Abagnale’s story, Spielberg found one of the main themes of his work: the difficulty of separating from a parent or child. “Frank’s transition into adulthood occurred under highly unusual circumstances, which fascinated me. I truly believe that Frank was deeply affected by his parents’ divorce. Children respond in many ways, and Frank’s response was so unique it deserved a film”, the filmmaker remarked.
