Every day, AlloCiné suggests a movie to watch or rewatch on TV. Tonight: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Philip Seymour Hoffman star in a deliciously sharp political satire.
Based on the astonishing true story of Congressman Charlie Wilson, as chronicled in the book by George Crile, the brilliant political satire “Charlie Wilson’s War” hit theaters in 2008 and is a must-see! It explores the extraordinary life of a Texas congressman known for his love of alcohol and women, who played a key role in the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan in the late 1980s, ultimately leading to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Starring Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Philip Seymour Hoffman…
“Charlie Wilson’s War”, a film with an unbelievable story directed by the late Mike Nichols (“The Graduate”, “Working Girl”) and penned by Aaron Sorkin, is delightfully entertaining. With a keen sense of irony and flavorful dialogue, this satirical chronicle boldly critiques U.S. politics and shines with a top-notch cast including Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and the regal Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Director Mike Nichols and actor Tom Hanks met with the real Charlie Wilson to better prepare for the film. “He has a phenomenal presence and an incredible ability to listen,” Nichols remarked. “He’s courteous, kind, thoughtful, and unusually candid. He’s the only politician I know who refuses to sugarcoat things and speaks with genuine spontaneity.“
“A consummate politician, remarkably forthright”
Tom Hanks (who has pondered superhero movies) was also impressed by Charlie Wilson. “He’s a seasoned politician, remarkably forthright. A true Texan with an incredible charm,” he said. “When I asked him how he’d respond to an opponent determined to unseat him, who would criticize his penchant for drinking, women, and lively evenings, he replied: ‘My opponents can say what they like, but they can’t deny that we’ve passed more bills in favor of Medicare, taken better care of our veterans, and more…’“
And Tom Hanks concluded: “Charlie Wilson had already devoted a lot of time and energy to George’s book. He was accustomed to being questioned about his virtues, but had no objections to discussing his faults. He told us more than once: only the truth interests him.“
A smart comedy is always a good choice, right? So, tune into Arte this Sunday night to enjoy “Charlie Wilson’s War”, a perfect example of one!
