Having become a cult classic over the years despite a disappointing box office, “The Shawshank Redemption,” a film adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name, was led by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. But did you know that Tom Cruise was very close to playing one of the main roles?

Frank Darabont, who had acquired the rights to adapt the novel, was offered a substantial sum of money by Rob Reiner, who desperately wanted to direct the film with Tom Cruise in the role of the banker after having directed him in “A Few Good Men.” However, Darabont declined to give up the direction.

Even without Rob Reiner directing, Tom Cruise came very close to portraying Andy Dufresne on screen, as he participated in a script reading session. However, the Hollywood star declined the offer at the last moment.

“I Think Tom Was a Bit Nervous”

“I think Tom was a bit nervous about working with a first-time director. I don’t hold it against him,” said Frank Darabont in an interview with USA Today. “But he might have been too big for the film I wanted to make. It wasn’t a ‘Cool Hand Luke’ type of role, looking for a Paul Newman. It was a bit less daring, more subtle than that.”

In the end, Tim Robbins was cast as Andy Dufresne in “The Shawshank Redemption.” Tom Cruise, who will next appear in “Digger” on September 30, went on to star in a certain “Mission: Impossible.” Not much to regret there, after all…
