Florian Zeller is back in action! The novelist, who has recently been inducted into the French Academy, has kicked off production of his new movie, “Bunker,” set to be filmed in London and Madrid.

An impressive cast has been assembled! According to Variety, Paul Dano is joining the lineup which already includes Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem in leading roles. Stephen Graham, recently seen in the hit series “Adolescence” on Netflix, and Patrick Schwarzenegger, from season 3 of “White Lotus,” are also part of the cast.

The plot centers on an architect who takes on a morally ambiguous project: constructing a survival bunker for a tech billionaire. As the project progresses, his wife starts to question their 17-year marriage…

A Film Crafted for this Cinematic Couple!

In a statement reported by Deadline, Florian Zeller shared, “I wanted to tell the story of a marriage, and I was deeply motivated by the desire to work with a real-life couple. I was immediately drawn to the idea of collaborating with Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, two of the most talented actors of their generation, who also happen to be one of the most iconic couples in cinema. I wrote Bunker specifically for them.

He added, “This film will push the boundaries of storytelling and emotional truth, blurring the lines between reality and fiction in a way that is both captivating and profoundly human.

Tenth Film Collaboration Between Cruz and Bardem

Cruz and Bardem have appeared together in several films: “Everybody Knows” (2018), “Escobar” (2017), “The Counselor” (2013), “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (2008), “Don’t Tempt Me” (2001), “Live Flesh” (1997), “Más que amor, frenesí” (1996), “Love Can Seriously Damage Your Health” (1996), and finally “Jamón Jamón” (1992).

This will be a psychological thriller, penned by Florian Zeller himself. It marks his third feature film as both a writer and director, following “The Son” and “The Father” (refer to the interview above). “The Father” was a significant critical and public success, earning a 4.3 out of 5 rating from viewers on AlloCiné and surprising many as one of the standout films of 2021.

The announcement of Paul Dano joining the cast comes amidst a media storm stirred up by Quentin Tarantino. During a podcast appearance, the director, known for his forthright opinions, harshly criticized Dano’s performance: “There Will Be Blood would have been a strong contender for number one or two if it didn’t have one major flaw… and that flaw is Paul Dano. Obviously, it’s supposed to be a duel of actors, but it’s clear that it’s not.

Paul Dano will soon be seen in Olivier Assayas’s upcoming film “The Kremlin Mage,” set for release in France on January 21, 2026.
