Scorsese Nearly Quit Filmmaking 24 Years Ago After This 4.4-Rated Historical Movie!

“I had decided it was over, truly.” Martin Scorsese is not one to share his deepest struggles casually. However, in an extensive profile for GQ in 2023, while promoting Killers of the Flower Moon, he peeled back the curtain on one of the darkest times in his life. This period was marked by the tumultuous production of Gangs of New York in 2002 and his draining battle with producer Harvey Weinstein.

Film length, budget, editing… Scorsese clashed with Weinstein on everything. This relentless struggle pushed him to the brink. He then felt creatively suffocated, trapped in a Hollywood system he no longer recognized.

“I realized I couldn’t work if I had to make films that way. If that was the only way I was allowed to shoot, then I had to stop. Because the results weren’t satisfying. It was extremely difficult at times, and I wouldn’t survive. It would have killed me.“

Forced to Collaborate with Weinstein Again

Regrettably for him, Scorsese’s troubles were not yet over. Two years later, the New York director found himself compelled to work with Weinstein once more, this time on The Aviator, with Leonardo DiCaprio leading the cast again.

“I was against it. There was a meeting, and they forced my hand. I had already been, uh, impregnated, so to speak. And there was no way out.” The shoot went smoothly until the final weeks of editing. Warner Bros. and Miramax then cut the funding, forcing him to dig $500,000 out of his own pocket to finish the film. “I just said: ‘I’m not making films anymore.’“

It was The Departed in 2006 that reignited his passion and finally earned him an Oscar for Best Director. However, not everything was perfect under the California sun, as Warner Bros. attempted to turn it into a franchise… pushing Scorsese towards complete independence.

Ironically, Martin Scorsese almost put a nice final touch on this saga with a project for a Gangs of New York series, of which he would have directed the first two episodes. Unfortunately, this project never materialized.
