Dwayne Johnson Teams Up with Cinematic Legend Martin Scorsese
Dwayne Johnson has officially confirmed his role in an upcoming Martin Scorsese film! Recent updates reveal that multiple studios and streaming platforms were competing for the project, with Netflix currently leading the race.
The film, which is yet to be titled, is a crime thriller set in the tumultuous 1960s and 1970s in Hawaii. It will star Dwayne Johnson alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt, creating an exceptionally promising cast.
The plot centers on an emerging mafia boss with charismatic flair, who finds himself embroiled in a violent and bloody battle with rival crime syndicates and mainland corporations. His goal is to seize ultimate control over the island’s underworld and protect his ancestral lands.
Johnson shared the news on his Instagram account, expressing his gratitude for this creatively inspiring phase of his career. He mentioned working closely with his friends and, notably, the esteemed director Marty Scorsese. He reflected on the past influence of the mafia in places like New York, Miami, Chicago, Las Vegas, and notably Hawaii, where he grew up.
In his post, Johnson wrote: “I’m grateful for this most creative and inspiring period in my career: working closely with my friends and, of course, maestro Marty Scorsese. In the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the mafia controlled New York, Miami, Chicago, Las Vegas, and had a particularly strong grip on the island where I grew up: Hawaii. And much more. Aloha nui loa xo.“
According to Dark Horizons, the film is expected to have a hefty budget, comparable to the $200 million spent on Scorsese’s recent masterpieces, Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) and The Irishman (2019).
This new feature will also mark a reunion for Dwayne Johnson and his Jungle Cruise (2021) co-star Emily Blunt, with whom he will also appear in The Smashing Machine, expected to release this year. Reportedly, it was this duo who initially pitched the idea to Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, who then brought on Nick Bilton to pen the script. The actors, the director, the screenwriter, along with producers Dany Garcia, Lisa Frechette, and Rick Yorn, are all on board for this project.
The start date for filming has not yet been announced.
In the meantime, you can catch Scorsese’s latest films: Killers of the Flower Moon on Apple TV+ or on VOD, and The Irishman on Netflix.
