At the Venice Film Festival to promote Benny Safdie’s film “The Smashing Machine,” Dwayne Johnson appears to be entering a new phase in his career, potentially leading to an Oscar nomination.
We’ve grown accustomed to seeing him in action-packed movies filled with chase scenes and a plethora of special effects. With “The Smashing Machine,” written and directed by Benny Safdie, Dwayne Johnson—formerly known as “The Rock”—aims to redefine his acting persona.
Highly anticipated at the Venice Film Festival, where he introduced this biopic about MMA legend Mark Kerr, the star debuted a new look—slimmer and sporting glasses—which has sparked a lot of buzz. Is Hollywood’s “muscle man” preparing for a dramatic transformation?
Breaking Away from Typecasting
Primarily known for being a box-office king with roles in franchise films like Fast and Furious, Jumanji, and Black Adam, Dwayne Johnson isn’t turning his back on his past but is signaling a desire to shift gears. This is what he shared during a press conference:
“I had this burning desire and a voice telling me: ‘What if I could do more than this?’ Sometimes, it’s hard to know what you’re capable of when you’ve been typecast. (…) I’ve been afraid to dive deep, to be intense and raw until today.“
For “The Smashing Machine,” the actor shed 60 pounds and moved towards drama alongside Emily Blunt, who plays Dawn Staples, Mark Kerr’s ex-wife. The result? Critics are praising the former wrestling star’s performance.
“It’s easy to forget that it’s Dwayne Johnson, partly because of the prosthetics he subtly hides behind, but also because he is emotionally transformed“, notes GQ. The Hollywood Reporter describes his role as “the most captivating” of his career, while Variety calls it an “extraordinary performance“.
Future Oscar Contender?
Typically, these transformative roles are seen as a necessary step for actors aiming to make a mark in the awards circuit. With “The Smashing Machine,” Dwayne Johnson continues this tradition, and his name is already being mentioned by experts alongside others like George Clooney.
For long-time fans, there’s no need to worry. Dwayne Johnson isn’t ready to abandon blockbuster films just yet. He will soon star in the live-action remake of “Moana” for Disney. However, the actor is keen to keep up his new momentum and is reportedly preparing a project with Martin Scorsese.
