Every day, AlloCiné recommends a movie to watch or rewatch on TV. Tonight, Arte is airing a moving film that earned Karin Viard the César Award for Best Actress in 2000.
Directed by the late Sólveig Anspach, “Haut les coeurs” was released on November 3, 1999, in theaters. In the film, Karin Viard plays a young woman named Emma who is experiencing pregnancy for the first time when she receives life-altering news: she is diagnosed with breast cancer during her pregnancy.
A Heart-Wrenching Tale
The initial diagnosis is harsh and seemingly final. To undergo treatment, she would need to terminate her pregnancy. However, Emma’s partner, Simon, rejects this grim fate and encourages her to seek alternative options. They consult a second specialist who offers a glimmer of hope: it is possible to treat her illness without ending the pregnancy.
With renewed determination, Emma stands up to the challenge. Her body, once felt like a traitor, now becomes a battlefield marked by dual urgencies: to survive and to give birth. Oscillating between fear and resolve, she embarks on an uncompromising fight, fueled by newfound energy. It is not just her own life at stake anymore, but the lives of two connected beings, and she is determined to win at all costs.
A poignant and necessary drama about illness, “Haut les coeurs” not only launched the career of director Sólveig Anspach, known for works like “Lulu femme nue” and “L’Effet aquatique,” but also stands as a sad irony as Anspach herself passed away in 2015 due to breast cancer, the same disease faced by her protagonist, portrayed by Karin Viard.
Alongside Viard, Laurent Lucas excels in the role of her partner, Simon. The cast also includes Julien Cottereau, Claire Wauthion, Philippe Duclos, and Charlotte Clamens. At its release in 1999, “Haut les coeurs” attracted over 200,000 viewers to theaters.
