Marion Le Corroller’s Debut Film “Sanguine” Explores the Physical Toll of Stress on Young Workers
Marion Le Corroller, a French filmmaker, makes her feature film debut with “Sanguine,” a movie that delves into the physical effects of stress on young professionals. This body horror film made waves during its Midnight Screening.
Something is amiss in the halls of Charles Boyau Hospital. Margot (played by Mara Taquin), a young intern, begins her rotation in the emergency department. Under the intense pressure from her superior (Karin Viard), she starts to experience bleeding from every pore of her body.
This extreme physical response is a direct result of a system that relentlessly pushes young workers to their limits. Soon, Margot discovers that the bleeding is just the beginning of a far more disturbing transformation…
In her first feature film, French writer-director Marion Le Corroller tackles a highly relevant and political subject: the impact of work on the mental and physical health of the youth. The film addresses issues like performance targets, competition, self-sacrifice, and lack of recognition, turning a sadly common reality into a horrifying journey.
Here are some images from the standing ovation at the Midnight Screening:
The film is not only politically charged but also serves as a solid piece of entertainment with a pop aesthetic and a soundtrack by electronic musician ROB. While it might remind viewers of Julia Ducournau’s “Raw” and Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance,” Marion Le Corroller charges forward, fully committing to her vision. The director drew inspiration from her own experiences in the finance world to craft this narrative.
The story unfolds with a series of unsettling scenes involving scabs, scars, skin peeling, burning flesh, and molting—a truly gruesome feast that may upset even the most filled stomachs. “Sanguine” marks a promising start for Marion Le Corroller, who has already begun writing her second feature film, which will also belong to the genre film category.
“Sanguine” hits theaters on October 28.
