Even the greats can be awestruck: for years, Jean Rochefort never dared speak to Jean Gabin. That changed the day a César award gave him the courage he needed, leading to an encounter as hilarious as it was unexpected.
Half a century ago, a memorable scene unfolded between two titans of French cinema: Jean Rochefort and Jean Gabin. Long after, until his death in 2017, Rochefort enjoyed recounting this episode with the humorous perspective that defined him.
A stalwart of the silver screen, Jean Rochefort built an impressive career alongside major actors like Jean-Pierre Marielle, Valérie Lemercier, Claude Brasseur, Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Philippe Noiret. Yet, despite his vast experience and confidence, he felt unnerved by the formidable presence of the iconic Jean Gabin.
Persistent Intimidation by a Legend
In the early 1960s, during the filming of “Un singe en hiver,” Jean Rochefort visited his friend Jean-Paul Belmondo on set. However, confronted with Gabin’s presence, he couldn’t bring himself to speak: admiration and intimidation overwhelmed him, keeping him at bay.
It wasn’t until 1976 that he finally found the courage to approach him. By then, Rochefort had just received significant recognition with a César for his performance in Bertrand Tavernier’s “Que la fête commence.” This accolade seemed to give him the boost needed to face the man who intimidated him so much.
As he shared in a 2013 video interview with Real Life: “Gabin terrified me. I never dared speak to him. I went to see Jean-Paul Belmondo once while he was filming ‘Un Singe en hiver.’ I never dared approach him. And then I got a César. And there he was, in front of me, 15 meters away, with Michèle Morgan.”
A Late Encounter… and an Unforgettable Quip
This time, he went for it. Driven by his recent award, he decided to approach him. The scene, as he described it, remains as comical as it is unforgettable: “This time, Rochefort, you’ve got a César under your arm, you’re going to do it. I catch up to him, tap him on the shoulder, he turns around, and I hear this wonderful phrase: ‘Oh, it’s you! I thought you were a journalist, I was about to give you a smack.’ And then he walked away.”
By then, Jean Rochefort had already been honored with the César for Best Supporting Actor for “Que la fête commence” in 1976, and two years later, he won Best Actor for “Le Crabe-Tambour.” His career was eventually celebrated in its entirety in 1999 with an Honorary César.
Beyond the anecdote, this belated meeting well illustrates the respect and even fear that Jean Gabin could inspire, even in the most seasoned actors.
