One of the standout scenes in “Just an Illusion” came from an impromptu moment and could have been entirely different or not happened at all! We’ll explain.
Following hits like “Those Happy Days,” “The Intouchables,” and “C’est la vie,” the dynamic duo Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache return with a new film set in the 1980s. “Just an Illusion” is a charming and poignant family tale filled with humor, emotion, and a healthy dose of nostalgia, whether you lived through that era or not! One scene, in particular, might have caught your attention: Camille Cottin’s dance to “I’m So Excited” by the Pointer Sisters.
“Forever, this song will remind people of Camille’s dance!”
Speaking to our team, Camille Cottin shared details about this memorable sequence: “I think I’m not alone in having danced to The Pointer Sisters in my living room! I definitely recommend it. It feels great!” Louis Garrel added, “Camille truly performed an incredible dance. I was lucky enough to witness this dance on set.”
“But you danced too, right?” she continued. “It wasn’t planned!” replied Louis Garrel. “The directors just told me at one point, ‘go for it’! But I was afraid to mess it up. She danced non-stop for 5 minutes. Everyone on set saw the grace of Camille dancing! Forever, this song will remind people of Camille’s dance!”
“At one point we realized something was missing, and we just went for it with an improvisation.”
How did the directors conceive this scene? “It was really about letting go. It suited Camille’s character, Sandrine, at that point in the movie. And more importantly, something happens when someone dances. There’s a grace, something almost magical, and we try to capture that in all our films.”
They added, “this scene wasn’t scripted. At one point we realized something was missing, and we just went for it with an improvisation. There weren’t many takes.”
“And Louis Garrel showed up unexpectedly, which Camille didn’t know about, and it created a moment that moved us, which said much more than a scripted scene could. At that moment, it overshadowed the script, and something happened in that scene. Camille gave us a magical moment.”
The movie’s playlist:
The plot centers on the early emotional experiences of a 13-year-old boy: Vincent lives in the Parisian suburbs in a middle-class family, between a distant older brother and constantly quarreling parents. As he is “no longer” a child yet “not yet” an adult, we share his questions and doubts about identity, friendship, family, religion, desire, and first loves.
“Just an Illusion” is currently in theaters.
