What Happened to Sara Ramirez (Callie) After Leaving Grey’s Anatomy 10 Years Ago?

Best known for portraying Dr. Callie Torres on “Grey’s Anatomy” for a decade, Sara Ramirez left the hit medical drama in 2016. What has the actor been up to since then? Here’s everything you need to know!

A Beloved and Pivotal Character

After first gaining fame in the Broadway musical Spamalot, where they won a Tony Award for their portrayal of the Lady of the Lake, Sara Ramirez joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy in its second season in 2006. The actor, who came out as non-binary in 2020, brilliantly played Dr. Callie Torres, an orthopedic surgery specialist, for ten years.

As a passionate and impulsive character initially introduced as George O’Malley’s (T. R. Knight) love interest, Callie later discovers her bisexuality in season 4, making her one of the first regular queer characters on a primetime TV show. Her significant romantic storyline with pediatric surgeon Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) left a lasting impact on the series. After a decade of dedicated performance that earned critical and public acclaim, Sara Ramirez decided to leave Grey’s Anatomy in 2016. At the end of season 12, Callie bids farewell to her friends and colleagues and moves to New York.

Two Significant Roles Post-Grey’s Anatomy

After producing the teen drama film Loserville in 2016, Ramirez returned to television with a recurring role in Madam Secretary. From 2017 to 2019, during seasons 4 and 5 of the political drama, they portrayed Kat Sandoval, a new advisor to the Secretary of State played by Tea Leoni.

Later, Ramirez starred in the Sex and the City follow-up series, And Just Like That, starting in 2021. They played the non-binary comedian Che Díaz, who becomes involved with Miranda (Cynthia Nixon). Unfortunately, the character did not resonate well with fans and quickly became unpopular. Ramirez was not asked back for the third and final season of the series, which they reportedly were not pleased about.

Though physically absent from the screen since 2023, Ramirez can still be heard in the original version of the series Sofia the First and its spin-offs, voicing Queen Miranda, the mother of the heroine, since 2012. In 2024, they will also voice a character in the animated series Vera, set in the Scooby-Doo universe.

To this date, Sara Ramirez, who also appeared in the 2020 documentary series Visible: Out on Television about the representation of the LGBTQ+ community on TV, does not have any ongoing projects in front of the camera.
