Grey’s Anatomy Shocker: How Sarah Drew Overcame Her Heartbreaking Exit!

Sarah Drew recently opened up again about her harsh and unjust dismissal from the long-running medical drama that made her famous, “Grey’s Anatomy,” a situation she has since overcome with the help of her children.

She portrayed the beloved character April Kepner on “Grey’s Anatomy” for eight seasons, starting from the show’s sixth season, capturing the hearts of viewers as well as that of Jackson Avery (played by Jessie Williams).

Over 202 episodes, April’s storylines included memorable moments, from her firing from Seattle Grace to her significant role in the famous hospital shooting episode, and of course, her romance with Jackson.

Although she was a main character, when Sarah Drew’s time on “Grey’s Anatomy” came to an end, fans were shocked to see her leave the series—alongside Jessica Capshaw, who played Arizona Robbins. With their departures at the end of season 14, the show lost two beloved and significant characters simultaneously.

Since leaving, the two actresses have reprised their roles in “Grey’s Anatomy,” with Sarah Drew making just two additional appearances that notably saw April reunite with Jackson and move to Boston with him.

Since then, the actress has had time to reflect on her dismissal. As reported by Télé Loisirs, she attended a charity concert organized by the American Heart Association on January 30th. During the event, she spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her departure from the series. Although she once described the firing as “mean and unfair,” she has since managed to find benefits from the experience for both herself and her children.

“Life is full of ups and downs. There are always challenging moments. And in life, no one can escape them. However, I believe it’s possible to find something positive in every moment of sorrow. These are things that one cannot see at the moment because we are disappointed, sad, or angry… Personally, when I was saddened, I was able to find moments of happiness with my children.”

A Life Lesson

Speaking of her children, Sarah Drew revealed that her son Micah, 13, and her daughter Hannah, 10, are interested in theater and the world of television, a dangerous world that, in her own words, “has the power to strip actors of their own identity.”

“One day, you are adored by everyone, and the next, no one cares about you, you are nothing to people, because you’ve become too old, too this, or too that,” she stated.

She added: “Fortunately, having people who love you in your life reminds you of your true worth. And that, whether you gain or lose a job… I believe that’s all we really need.”

The 44-year-old actress has thus turned her firing into a life lesson for herself and her children who supported her through these tough times, helping her move past this ordeal. In 2022, she was seen in the film “Christmas Olympics” opposite her former “Grey’s Anatomy” co-star, Justin Bruening – and star of Netflix’s “Sweet Magnolias.”

Meanwhile, “Grey’s Anatomy” continues its journey: the second part of its 21st season will air on our screens on March 6, 2025.
