Martin Henderson Spills on His Brief Stint in Grey’s Anatomy: “They Didn’t Know What to Do With Me”

Martin Henderson, a key figure in Virgin River, also had a notable role in Grey’s Anatomy. Does he look back fondly on his time in the medical drama? Here’s his response!

Now a leading man in Netflix’s Virgin River, Martin Henderson was first seen in America’s most famous medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy. Following the death of Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), Henderson took on the challenging role of Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) new love interest.

Unfortunately, their romance was short-lived, and the actor was only part of the show for two brief years. It’s fair to say that this plotline didn’t leave a lasting impression on long-time fans. But would the actor be willing to return to Grey’s Anatomy if the opportunity arose? In an interview with Deadline, he gave a candid answer:

“I’m Always Open to the Possibility”

“I haven’t thought about it much, mainly because I’m deeply involved and busy with Virgin River, as well as other projects and my personal life. But Shonda Rhimes has always been a great support. We’ve collaborated on several occasions and various projects, so I’m always open to the possibility.”

“I Feel Like They Didn’t Know What to Do with Nathan”

He continues, “However, it would have to align with what’s happening in my life and career at that time. It would also have to feel like the character really has something to do and that I can contribute something of myself because I feel like they didn’t know what to do with the character of Nathan.”

According to Martin Henderson, Nathan was merely a placeholder for Derek: “It’s almost as if he was just a gap filler after Derek left. They figured they needed a new boyfriend for Meredith. So, I was thrown into this world, but I think there was never a clear plan for him.”

“If I were to return, I would make sure that there’s a real purpose and a reason that explains why he’s back.” It’s clear he has given this some thought! In the meantime, you can catch the actor in season 6 of Virgin River, available since December 19 on Netflix.
