Fresh off winning the Grand Prix at the last Series Mania festival, the Polish series “Proud,” created by Karol Klementewicz, has finally landed on HBO Max. But does it live up to the expectations it has set? We’ve watched the first few episodes, and to be honest…

What’s it About?

Filip, a young, impulsive, and self-assured gay model, has led a carefree life, seemingly untouchable by the world’s harsh realities. His self-doubt is hidden behind a veneer of arrogance, charm, and his modeling career success.

However, everything changes when a family tragedy turns his life upside down. Suddenly, Filip faces an unexpected challenge: caring for a child. He must now try to maintain his freedom and lifestyle while taking on a responsibility that is foreign to him.

Who’s in It?

“Proud” features a stellar performance by lead actor Ignacy Liss and includes a cast of Polish actors who are bound to become familiar names soon: Kamil Studnicki, Maria Sobocinska (All for my mother), Pawel Tomaszewski (The Remedy for Oblivion), Mateuz Wieclawek (A Life Apart), and Maja Ostaszewska (Green Border).

Is It Worth Watching?

With such a premise, one might expect a heavy social drama primarily focused on addressing homophobia in Europe. However, surprisingly, the series does not dwell on pitiful compassion. Instead, it celebrates joy.

True to its protagonist, “Proud” is a vibrant and irreverent show that turns its deeply political plot into a massive celebration of bodies, music, and love. It’s a cinematic tribute to the only political fight worth fighting: the right to happiness.

The series is indeed challenging, emotional, and political, but it never allows us to wallow in sorrow. Whether it’s about synthetic paradises or an uncle’s love for his niece, “Proud” reminds us that as long as we continue to dance, love, and fight, nothing can touch us. Despite homophobia, social violence, and even death itself, we must never forget that life is a celebration to which we are all invited.

“Proud” is available on HBO Max.
