Stallone Refuses to Recast Iconic Role in Action Trilogy, Honors Actor 23 Years After Death!

When John Rambo hit theaters in 2008, two decades had passed since Rambo III. The iconic veteran played by Sylvester Stallone was called back into action, but a key figure from his earlier adventures was missing: Colonel Sam Trautman.

No detailed explanation for his absence is provided in the film. While a few archival clips briefly revisit the character, he no longer appears in the story. This decision was directly linked to the passing of his actor, Richard Crenna, who died in 2003 at the age of 76.

The fourth Rambo film, released five years later and dedicated to the memory of the actor, did not attempt to replace the man who had stood by Stallone since the start of the franchise.

For Stallone, No One Could Replace Richard Crenna

Sylvester Stallone was quite clear on this point. As he told Esquire in 2019, Trautman simply could not survive Crenna’s passing: “The character died with Crenna in 2003.“

The idea of casting James Brolin was mentioned, but Stallone opposed it. Another concept was then considered to introduce a new character who could fill a similar role in the narrative.

An early version of the John Rambo screenplay featured Ed Bumgardener, a mysterious government official who would have warned Rambo about the political consequences of his actions in Burma before getting involved in organizing a rescue operation.

However, Bumgardener did not make it through various script rewrites. Some of his lines were instead given to Lewis, the leader of the mercenary group. Sylvester Stallone also considered paying a more direct tribute to Trautman by showing Rambo at his grave, but this idea never progressed beyond the concept stage.

A Role Richard Crenna Almost Never Played

Trautman’s fate could have been very different right from the first film. As ScreenRant recalls, several big names were considered for the adaptation of David Morrell’s novel. Steve McQueen and Al Pacino were possibilities for playing Rambo, while Kirk Douglas was initially set to portray Trautman.

However, Douglas left the project over disagreements about the script. Thus, Richard Crenna took on the role. His portrayal added a new dimension to Trautman, who was depicted as harsher in the original novel, which even ended with him killing Rambo.

This role became one of the most famous in a career filled with diverse roles, from television with The Real McCoys to films like The Sand Pebbles, Wait Until Dark, and Body Heat.

Trautman, More Than Just Rambo’s Superior

Over three films, the relationship between Trautman and his former soldier continuously evolved. In the first Rambo, the colonel arrives in a small American town as local law enforcement struggles to contain the former Green Beret. He is one of the few people who understands what Rambo is capable of and the traumas he carries with him.

Rambo II: The Mission partly reverses their roles: Trautman finds Rambo in prison and offers him a chance to regain his freedom by participating in a mission to locate American POWs in Vietnam.

Then, in Rambo III, the roles are swapped again. Captured by Soviet forces in Afghanistan, Trautman becomes the one Rambo must rescue. The film ends with the two men leaving together, further strengthening their bond.

This deep connection also explains why simply replacing Richard Crenna with another actor would have been virtually unthinkable for Sylvester Stallone. Trautman had become inseparable from his actor.

Thus, the colonel remained absent until the end of the franchise. When Rambo: Last Blood was released in 2019, no new incarnation of the character was introduced. Sixteen years after the death of Richard Crenna, Stallone remained true to his decision: Trautman would never be played by another actor.
